That has to be a first! It's usually my 2-star album choices that go on to win a poll. Tongue

Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway, I'm voting for Beth Gibbons too. Smile

Patti Smith. I like everything she does.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I had not heard that Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra performance of composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki Symph #3 with the great Krzysztof Penderecki directing and Beth Gibbons singing. As she is "just a performer even if it's a great performance, I would be less likely to vote for it.

My favourites are:

Fiona Apple - When the Pawn (thought this would have a vote by now)
Bjork - Debut
Kate Bush - Lionheart
Juana Molina - Segundo
Anna von Hausswolff - Ceremony
Patti Smith Group - Radio Ethiopia
St. Vincent - Actor
Susanne Sundfor - The Brothel
Weyes Blood - The Innocents
Chelsea Wolfe - Apokalypsis

And of those I most feel the St. Vincent, Sundfor, Molina and von Hausswolff now.... Tough. I'll give it to actor for some sentimental reasons as it helped me through a rough patch in 2023.

Quite a number of good ones here of course. I'll vote for Tori Amos, who doesn't seem to get much recognition in this forum but has done some great music with this album maybe her best.

^ Despite it being Logan's run, I actually don't know Tori Amos well.

I've known and loved Symphony of Sorrowful Songs since I was 20. As someone who can struggle quite a bit with the vocal histrionics of classically trained operatic voices (less so with "classical singing"), Beth's naturally fragile delivery in the third movement is how I always wanted it interpreted. Hers is a polarizing performance for sure. It seems people either hate it or love it. No in betweens. Actually there are moments where she attempts to "go full operatic style" that I find borderline painful to listen to. I almost wish she hadn't but I suppose the source material simply demands it. I'm being overly critical. Pain is part of the musical experience. I take Beth Gibbons over everyone's favorite Dawn Upshow any day of the week (my favorite was always Zofia Kilanowicz for budget label Naxos, anyway). Here's the full concert recorded live in all it's glory. It's really quite something

^ Beth Gibbons receives quite a bit of vocal coaching for that. I listened to that thanks to being alerted by this topic. I definitely prefer that to the performance I heard with Dawn Upshow, David Zinman & London Sinfonietta.

^Yes I know Beth did. Some parts would probably have been impossible for her to approach at all, if she didn't. Her performance still brings the humanity of the her/a natural singing voice, in a way that speaks to me on another level than Dawn's more "impressive" voice. I suppose you agree.

^ I guessed you'd know, but a general comment for the thread. I do agree with your assessment and seem to feel the same. It's not only for the vocals that I prefer the version with Beth Gibbons but her vocals are a very significant part of it.

When the Pawn absolutely gets my vote. Such a masterclass in merging alt-rock, jazz fusion, and art pop into one cohesive whole, and it still stands as Fiona's masterpiece in my opinion
Take me down, to the underground
Won't you take me down, to the underground
Why oh why, there is no light
And if I can't sleep, can you hold my life
