Quite a few of these debuts feel like false starts, and has little in common with the artists they would later become. But these are great:

Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
Joni Mitchell - Song to a Seagull
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Out of Season

Voted for Linda

It's good to know that these artists get better as they go along, as I'm not familiar with many of them.

I voted for Linda too. Thumbs Up

Of course so much I love here.

PJ Harvey would be the biggest missing name, I think.... For some other names not in the poll that I might do an additional topic on:

Maria Bobbitt-Chertock (aka Maria BC)
Alexandra Drewchin (aka Eartheater)
Mylène Farmer
Françoise Hardy
PJ Harvey
Kristin Hayter (aka Lingua Ignota)
Jenny Hval
Yaya Kim
Camila Moreno
Melody Prochet (aka Melody's Echo Chamber)
Xandra Metcalfe (aka Uboa)
Doji Morita
Hiromi Moritani (aka Phew)
Hyogo Kobe (aka Haco)
Christa Päffgen (aka Nico)
Chloé Pelletier-Gagnon (aka Klô Pelgag)
Catherine Ribeiro (if including bands)
Emma Ruth Rundle
Konomi Sasaki
Isabelle Thorn (aka Dear Laika)

From the list, hard to choose, so will go with one with no vote which is Juana Molina - Segundo (1996). Segundo actually means second, and it is not her debut, but I do love the album.

^ I had to skip Juana Molina's debut because they were no videos available for her first album "Rara" on YouTube - maybe because it's very rare. Tongue

I could add P.J. Harvey to the next poll, but that would mean dropping someone from this poll to make way for her in the second album poll.  Ermm

I strongly would suggest specifying that with albums if skipping them. Segundo is even in the name as second, so even that might confuse people. So easy to make a note in the OP (to me that is more useful to know than having the youtube links and ratings). I would have skipped the first and added it to the second poll, with a note mentioning who you excluded the debut. That makes more sense to me.

PJ Harvey is a big name, so I would want her in the list if making it, but you could wait until, however third album, To Bring You My Love (wonderful album imo), which is huge and Beth Gibbons only has two albums. Don't you dare not consider having Lives Outgrown (Gibbons second, from this year, still my album of the year). I really like Obel and Olsen, but as they are fairly little know, I would consider removing one of them for now, can add albums later. But of course it's your poll, and I'm happy to see lesser known names I like getting exposure from more than me.

^ It's a good thing you mentioned keeping Beth Gibbons in as I was planning on dropping her from the second album poll, seeing as she's only released one solo album so far. Smile

That would have been a tragedy from my perspective as big as carousel is a lie and there is no sanctuary. It's her only "solo" album, it is, I think, terrific and it would be sad to exclude a 2024 album as we approach the end of 2024. And she's got some pretty stiff competition from some other names in this list for 2024. Also from this year, I love Julia Holter's Something in the Room She Moves, St. Vincent's All Born Screaming (she performed here in Vancouver not that long ago), and Chelsea Wolfe's She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She is very fine album too.

Kate Bush's remarkable debut ( I will also phone in my vote now for Never Forever, The Dreaming and Hounds Of Love when those come round Smile). I like Tori Amos as well but she ain't no Kate.

She isn't. But Joni's Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon and Court and Spark will get my vote over Lionheart, (the mostly amazing) Never For Ever, The Sensual World - and every single album onwards. I even choose Hejira over Kate's wonderful comeback album Aerial. Not even Joni can make me not vote for The Dreaming and Hounds of Love, though.
