Al I can say is “To each, his own.” If that’s how he fells then, What can be said or done?

No more than David Crosby. With two of the Who's original members deceased, it's a blessing that he's still around.

Yep, because of his child porn arrest and him continuing to tour as The Who without Keith and John.

Seems a bit harsh for the second one.

He seems a lightweight compared to Keith Richards ;-)

Welcome to the middle of the film.

Just for clarity and without wishing to condone his actions in 2003, Pete was arrested for using his credit card to access a website offering child pornography, although no images were downloaded. He was cautioned by the police and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years after saying he was trying to prove big banks were complicit in the child-porn industry. He remains active in charity work that deals with the consequences of the sexual abuse of children. Irrespective of any past misdemeanors and errors of judgement, he will always be one of the greatest British songwriters of all time whose work belongs in the same conversation as Lennon/McCartney, Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, Jagger/Richards, Paddy McAloon, Lloyd Cole, Strummer/Jones, Elton John, David Bowie, Queen, Jeff Lynne, Syd Barrett, Noel Gallagher et al. Hope Mr Townshend gets old before he dies.

...word...

I don't think anyone deserves to die, but I respect his revelations based on his past actions. He is a brilliant song writer, easily one of the greatest.

No, he doesn’t. He has been a hugely influential artist, one of my favourites.

Mind you, having read more than a few interviews with him over the years, what he says in these interviews should always be taken with a huge pinch of salt.

Pete Townshend is a friggin' musician. It's his work of art that counts.

But somehow Townsend should stop his self-loathing during interviews - as if it was some way of showing humility. Stern Smile
It's weird, because he comes off both somewhat arrogant, but also very auto-criticizing. Confused

I guess that's what he means most: he abused substances (inck booze) so much that he should've died much earlier, like a lot of "martyrs" the rock culture enhances too much.
But both Richards and Daevid (well the latter was clean for a couple of decades) show that you can live old and still engage in hazy pastures.

He (Pete) himself wrote "Hope I die before I get old" (and had Roger sing it) and I guess it's disturbing to live with that: they survived but the other two didn't. OuchNuke

I take it he also feels remorse (or regrets) towards Loon and The Ox for not having done more to help them.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

doesn't everyone?
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

The concept of death and the concept of "deserving" are alien to each other.

I'm not really the greatest Who fan, but he wrote Substitute and for that he deserves to live forever.

It's certainly a great song and like much of Townshend's best work, autobiographical in nature and, unusually for the habitual machismo realm of rawk, sung in the vulnerable first person ('I') about feelings of inadequacy, a search for a sense of belonging and dealing with persecution (Pete was mercilessly bullied as a schoolboy because of his appearance)

The piece suggests that 'he doesn't deserve to be alive' NOT that 'he deserves to die' . I think that subtle change of wording for the thread title is quite emotive tbh. Partly he says that because of the booze and drugs and hard partying as much as the personality thing. He think he is suggesting that better him (dying) than someone else with more moral fibre. I think that is quite common a feeling but he also admits that he has been a more useful member of society in the last 20 years than before. The raw honesty is good but then also common as you get close to checking out. At least he has contributed to art and that puts him way above certain members of the royal family who few would miss if they weren't around!
