"The Song Remains the Same" is a fine song, but the real eye opener from Led Zeppelin is "Black Dog". I still remember the first time I heard that album, and "Black Dog" cranked to high heaven....holy sh*t!

Hmm, from the list I'll take the Gabriel. But for me it's probably the first chord(s) of 'Good Times,Bad Times'. |

That was my next thought, but I thought for the sake of the hardcore proggers I'd go with the slightly proggier sounding tune.

There are really great opening tracks here. But I must go with the legendary 21st Century Schizoid Man of King Crimson.

Both King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man and Van Der Graaf Generator - Lemmings (Including COG) are very special to me, beyond anything else on the list even though there are great tracks there. 21st Century Schizoid Man was a "must have" track from my teenage years, and Lemmings opens my favourite album in a way that told me the album is going to be very special. It was a tough decision but it is: [drum roll] Van Der Graaf Generator - Lemmings (Including COG) ahead of King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man |

Tough choice, needs some consideration
May I ask why Dream Theater - On The Backs Of Angels? DT has much better openings than this one.

An odd listing since the songs come from across the release spectrum and not just from a first album perspective. I would be confident to say that most bands listed have better openers on other albums, but, OP'er gets to make their own list so... I'll go with ELP - The Barbarian with Yes, KC, Genesis, Supertramp and Peter Gabriel a close second

Btw: Funny that out of three Led Zeppelin-openers mentioned, none of them are Immigrant Song (but they are all stunning).

School is a phantastic album opener. There are many songs I like here and other great openers, but for this theme the vote goes to Supertramp.

I thought I'd mix it up a bit. Scenes starts with a narration track, Images' opening seemed really obvious, Awake's opening isn't really my favorite thing about it, Six Degrees and Octavarium people tend to forget about anything that's not the epic... I really like On The Backs Of Angels. Great song for me, and part of my intro to the band.
