Hey everyone! I took a bit of a break for the holidays but am back now for the next poll in this series. 2004 is a great year in particular for avant-prog (Guapo's Five Suns, Secret Chiefs 3's Book of Horizons, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Of Natural History), neo-prog (I.Q.'s Dark Matter, Magenta's Seven, Marillion's Marbles), and prog metal (Angra's Temple of Shadows, Ayreon's Human Equation, and Pain of Salvation's Be). Neal Morse also releases his sophomore album One, which really jumpstarted his solo career in the world of prog. However, I have to give my 2004 vote to Magma's absolutely fantastic comeback album K.A..

Mastodon.
2004 was a bland year in general IMHO.

The Dustsucker today. Could have gone with either Book Of Horizons or 5 Suns as well

No surprise again that the only album I've heard in the poll is by Ayreon, so that's who I'm going with again.

It would however be pretty cool to have you step out of that British comfort zone from time to time and sample something..different

There simply aren't enough hours in the day to listen to everything, however much I'd like to. I've listened to 700 prog albums since September 11th this year, although admittedly, they were all British albums.

I’m surprised you have enough hours in the day even for those 700! 😳 Do you listen to every second of every song on every album, or do you occasionally skip? Do you listen to every album more than once? I ask, not because I disagree with the way you listen, nor to criticise (we all do things differently), but because I think I have listened to just over 300 albums new to me this year - most of which have come to me for review, so have often been completely new to me. That is to say, not only have I not heard anything previously by the band or artist, but sometimes have not even heard of them previously at all. It’s not unusual for me to not be impressed on the first listen, or even to dislike what I hear on the first listen. Sometimes it takes several listens for an album to click, and sometimes what I loved on first listen, I realise is far less impressive when I come back to it. Especially when I’m reviewing for publication, and not just listening for my own enjoyment, I think it’s important to listen to an album many times before coming to any real conclusions or judgements. I guess I simply wonder how you can possibly give sufficient attention to that many albums in that short a space of time to come to the conclusions you do. Not saying you don’t. Just that I know I couldn’t. 🤷🏻♂️ |

I know. You bring this up every time people ask about the Britain thing If you are not interested in trying out other stuff then why keep participating in threads where you actually have to go out of your way in order to tell the rest of us..that you haven’t listened to any of the music? |

To be fair to Paul in this instance, despite there being a few British bands in this poll, the only album Paul said he’d listened to was one NOT by a British artist. 😄

Yes, I listen to every song on every album without skipping, even when I dislike the album, although I only listen to each album once only at the same time as adding the album to my Prog Britannia YouTube channel. Here's a full list of the artists and albums I've listened to since September 11th (with the number of albums by each artist in brackets). Prog Britannia Jon Anderson (20) Barclay James Harvest (26) Camel (18) Deep Purple (29) Electric Light Orchestra (20) Fruupp (4) David Gilmour (9) Annie Haslam (10) Illusion (4) Jade Warrior (14) King Crimson (14) Jon Lord (14) The Moody Blues (20) Nektar (17) Mike Oldfield (29) Pink Floyd (18) Queen (26) Renaissance (21) Spooky Tooth (10) Traffic (12) Uriah Heep (35) Van der Graaf Generator (16) Roger Waters (10) Yes (35) Zzebra (3) Total album playlists = 434 Prog Britannia Two The Alan Parsons Project (13) Kate Bush (13) Caravan (17) Dead Can Dance (11) Emerson, Lake & Palmer (20) Fleetwood Mac (27) Genesis (27) Steve Hillage (9) If (11) Jon & Vangelis (4) Khan (1) Led Zeppelin (13) Man (20) National Health (4) Sally Oldfield (17) Procol Harum (18) Quiet Sun (1) Rare Bird (5) Soft Machine (14) Robin Trower (29) U.K. Velvet Opera (Elmer Gantry's) Rick Wakeman Total album playlists = 274 You can probably see now why it doesn't leave me much time left over to listen to European prog artists. Nice poll, a lot of gret albums.
The albums from Marillion and Threshold are my favorite here, went with Threshold.

I’ve probably heard one Ayreon album in my life so I wouldn’t know But if I were Paul I’d probably visit the various Ayreon threads in order to let everyone know that I listened to that one and indeed have no interest in diving in any further. It’s just a strange way of approaching PA methinks. I love all kinds of styles and approaches to music..but there’s also a lot of stuff that does jack for me and that I have no real interest in exploring any further...yet I don’t visit the threads over PA that focuses on this stuff because I will have nothing interesting to add or say...other than proclaiming that I don’t know 99% of the albums and that I don’t see myself making up for it as my interests lie elsewhere. |

^ Just for the record, I've listened to every Ayreon album apart from the two most recent releases, and I'm pretty sure I still would have voted for Ayreon even if I'd heard every album in the poll. The Human Equation is a great album!

Great year for my tastes even if it's not a particularly well represented year in my collection. Every prog year has albums I love, and this year has some that have meant a lot to me.
These are my four favourites from the list (I haven't heard quite a few of those in the poll): Guapo - Five Suns Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizons Magma - K.A. Univers Zero - Implosion And the Guapo album gets my vote (one of my very favorite modern albums). Not on the list, but in PA, Pochakaite Malko's Laya is a favourite of mine as well as Far Corner's self-titled, Ahvak, Espers self-titled and Vashti Bunyan's Lookaftering. And I like Bjork's Medulla. Not in PA, but I want to give a nod to Air's Talkie Walkie, Electrelane's The Power Out, and to Stereolab's Margerine Eclipse. |
