    Posted: October 29 2019 at 01:53
This is the third of a 10-part alphabetical poll to determine who's the greatest guitarist of all time across all genres of music. When the results have all come in, I'll put the winners of each of the ten polls into a face-off poll to determine the overall winner of the Top 100 guitar heroes. If two guitarists finish in joint first place in the poll, then I'll include them both in the final face-off poll. Star

It's a tough choice for me this time around with Peter Green, David Gilmour and Steve Hackett all in the same poll. Smile

The Top 100 Guitar Heroes list is supplied courtesy of Guitarist Magazine.

Tough one between Gilmour and Hackett. Went with Hackett.

What, no Robert Fripp? I would opine that Guitarist Magazine is not a reliable source for anything about guitars for missing this icon.

Yep, Guitarist magazine is a joke. They listed Cobain as a guitar hero?

Maybe we need another poll for all of the guitar heroes Guitarist Magazine missed out of their Top 100 poll. Smile There are three names missing from the poll for starters: Stuart Adamson (of The Skids & Big Country), Gary Green (of Gentle Giant), and of course, Robert Fripp. Smile

Hackett seems like the obvious choice from this group, and I hate leaving out the supremely unique and expressive Bill Frisell and the fiery Rory Gallagher, but in the end, I had to throw some love at the greatest of bluesman, the awesome and seemingly eternal Buddy Guy.

As for those omitted from this stretch of the alphabet, who could easily displace at least half the list, there's:
Russ Freeman
Grant Geissman
Jeff Golub

I've heard of the Smooth Jazz guitarist Jeff Golub (who's sadly no longer with us), but I hadn't previously heard of Russ Freeman or Grant Geissman.

Actually, the other two are both smooth jazz/contemporary jazz guys as well.

Grant Geissman has a pretty good career as a solo artist in the contemporary jazz realm, but you've probably heard him laying down the guitar solo in Chuck Mangione's Feels So Good.  It's a positively killer solo, IMO one of the best in any genre.

Russ Freeman is the leader of the contemporary jazz outfit Rippingtons.

There are some good players on that list but for me, Frank Gambale is the man.

if this poll was about speed and virtose technique than Paul Gilbert, but for things like phracing, sound, tone, and bending, then either Gilmour or Hackett.  Gambale is also great.

I hope David Gilmour and Steve Hackett finish in joint first place, then I can put them both through to the final face-off round. Then again, I could put the top two guitarists from each of the ten polls through to the final round to make a total of twenty guitarists in the final poll. Smile

I seriously doubt any guitarists that are not either British or American will be on the list, which is plain ridiculous. this German guy would definitely be on my list:

the guitar on this track is simply fantastic. the solo in the "blues section" of this song is my favorite rock guitar solo of all time
