Topic: Web development, graphic design, wordpress etc. Posted: October 31 2017 at 09:58 |
I'm interested in learning these things but which one should I start with? Wordpress might be the easiest so I'm thinking of that but I don't have a blog at the moment or an idea for one(yet).

Please don't bring any more Wordpress sites into this world.

I'm a graphic designer. What are you looking to do? Career change or just taking an interest?

Ha ha. Really? Why do you say that? Are you a disgruntled blogger? :)

I'm glad you asked. Actually, I am interested in a career change. I have a BA is sociology but I'm currently unemployed. For right now I am thinking of pursuing either web development or graphic design. Someone told me not to do graphic design because it's so easy to hire someone to make logos for five dollars but I'm guessing there's a lot more to it then that. It would seem both are very competitive and it's probably a good idea for me to learn both but since I'm basically a newbie to both I would like to know which one is better for me to start with(hence the reason for me starting this post). I actually like the idea of making prog album covers so I'm leaning towards graphic design but again I have no experience and just want to know where to start(not literally because I have already bought classes on both on udemy) and what's the best way to start. Thanks.

I just think it's ridiculous that something as bloated as Wordpress is used for blogs and other such sites that don't even require any server-side stuff. If you want to learn web development, start with HTML and CSS, then move on to either JavaScript or PHP depending on your level of masochism. Or if you just want to quickly set up a blog, look into static site generators like Jekyll or Hugo.

Knowing what I know now I would probably lean more toward web design. There are way too many graphic designers out there right now so the market is kind of saturated. Good graphic design jobs are often very specialized. For example a company may want some one who has don a lot of pharmaceutical packaging or cosmetic packaging rather that just general design. Good luck with whatever you chose.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I guess maybe I'll stay away from wordpress at least for now. I thought maybe it would be a good way to get my feet wet but maybe it's not worth it.

Well, it does seem like it would be more work and more to learn but I understand where you are coming from. Maybe I'll just do graphic design part time as a hobby or for fun and it can be used as a skill I have acquired after I learn web design. So I think that's what I'll do(start with Web development). Thanks for your advice.

So I started an online web development course almost three weeks ago. I took a break but now have to decide if it's something I really want to pursue. There's a lot to learn and at the end there's no guarantee I'll be able to do anything with it.
I do feel it's probably a better choice than graphic design though. I had a discussion about this with my mom's boyfriend who was in the general field for a long time and he said that it's too difficult to find work in graphic design because the field is flooded with people willing to do it for so cheap. He said many people from India are willing to do it for five dollars. I'm not sure how true that is or not but I suppose there is some truth to that. Isn't there more to graphic design than just designing logos anyway? I'm wondering if I still should learn some design principles or some basics of it or at least photo shop. I don't want to get too side tracked but I do have an interest in artistic things as well.
