Topic: You have to listen to it a few times ... Posted: September 02 2005 at 05:59 |
... to realise you don't like it.
I was listening to a prog classic and thought it was good at first but after a few listens, I realised it's not my kind of music. That's the opposite of what's supposed to happen with prog. Has that happened to anyone-else?

^^ frankly no. I never immediately like anything unless its a new album by a band I really like. Some of my favourite albums are ones which I have thought 'what on earth is this?' and percevered with. Other albums, I never get into at all no matter how hard I try, but have never initially liked an album, and then gone off it!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I don't understand how you can really be into a band, but then not any more..
....ok you may not listen to them as much as you did (like me and Black Sabbath)...but don't they still hold a special place in your heart?

Sure, I can listen to them and kind of enjoy it, but it's not at all
my favourite piece of cake anymore.

Mostly, you like it at first, then you love it.

I think absence makes the heart grow fonder. I haven't heard Rocket to the Stars by Driver, from the album No Accident, since the mid seventies. I cannot even trace it on the internet. I think they are American and, to confuse the issue, there are other groups now that use the name Driver.

I've listened to enough music over the years to know what I like and what
I don't - very rarely do I need to listen to an album repeatedly in order to
know what I think of it. In fact, I have so many albums in my collection
(and so many new ones coming in) that I don't often get the opportunity
to listen to an LP repeatedly even if I do like it.

Wow, you took the words right out of my mouth. I have been listening to prog for 20 years now and most of the time, I can tell if I will like something on first hearing.

Doesn't that make you think that you're buying too many?

There are various "learning curves" ... sometimes I'm excited about something at first listen, and it may even grow on me for some time. But eventually I discover something which is even better, or I just realize that it contained some "cheap thrills" but little substance.
I think that everybody needs much time to decide if they really like something. A lot of experience with prog does help to reduce that time, but even the most experienced listener will need several listens distributed over several weeks ...

I've never liked a single Yes album on first hearing. I always have to 'get to know them' over a period of time. Ended up loving most of what I've heard by them.
Good albums are like people on first meeting, even if they seem like utter losers dont judge too quickly, there may be pleasant surprises to come.

I used to like the entire album Big Generator. Yeah. But to be fair,
Rhythm of Love is certainly more radio friendly and more concise than,
say, Gates of Delirium, even if it's ultimately not as good of a song.
However, I find myself more and more engrossed in We Can't Dance. Because Jesus he knows me...
