Ok people - someone at last has had the bravery to submit DEEP PURPLE into the Archives under Canterbury Scene!!!! - I can see the reason, as Deep Purple's early albums were not as heavy rock in content as later on. However, Deep Purple's work does not end at the "Fireball" album.

My question - can a group be included with only some of it's work being considered as opposed to all their work being considered?

This takes us back to the controversy of heavy rock groups such as Deep Purple and LED ZEPPELIN being "progressive" enough to be included in the Archives. I for one, feel that Deep Purple are not consistently "progressive" enough to be included. 

What are your thoughts?

We've been discussing this addition in the Collaborator's Zone, and most of us are against their addition.

My question is why would they out of all the genres be put under Canterbury?

Someone obviously knows nothing about prog music if they put Deep Purple under Canterbury. I can see the mistake as Art Rock like Rush, since they were a more metal based 1970s group, but I don't even think they qualify under that, as alot of their stuff was pop-rock oriented. They don't belong here in my opinion.

Deep Purple being "Canterbury" is the other issue with me also - I neglected to mention that in my initial posting or stress the fact that they are not "Canterbury". Perhaps this person needs to listen to more "Canterbury" to differentiate between that genre of music and that of the 70's Heavy Metal

Not hard to imagine it is a mistake . This choice you have to make for subgenres is done by scrolling down the list and click. but if you do not click out of the window right after it , the next time you scroll-mouse, will change your choice.
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

There does not seem to be much interest in my posting. I wonder if this means that Deep Purple will make the Archives...??

Actually they are in three other discussions right aboyt now!!!> once in the prog poll section (results is around 80% no ) full of stupid and less stupid remarks and twice in the collab lounge. Once in a poll (results are not far from 50-50) and another about the guy who introduced them as he did with the LEGENDARY PINK DOT!!!!

 After Purple, we fear he (Hassebedo or something like that) will introduce Green Day, Savoy Brown , Red HC Peppers etc.....

Folks need to listen to Purple's first four albums. Purple Mach I was a progressive rock band. It was Mach II that shifted to full on heavy metal.
why do we never get an answer when we're knocking at the door?

Deep Purple is NOT Canterbury - AT ALL.  Not even remotely.  Maybe if Jon Lord used a fuzz-box in the way Dave Stewart or Dave Sinclair then maybe, but they are too 'heavy'. At one stage I had mostly all of their albums and now I only own the first 3 with crooner Rod Evans.  Production values are pretty dated but they were bursting with great ideas. And if I may mention something else - Ian Gillan with his first post-Purple band 'Ian Gillan Band' had one helluva brilliant album called 'Clear Air Turbulence'.  Now that could qualify for being 'Prog'.
