The best wat to assess the bands is to listen, but not all listed have mp3's, also some of the mp3's are not truly indicative of the bands core music or that it might be a good or weak track.

So how about some recommendations along these lines. For example through listening to the mp3's i found i liked Pendragon and Karnataka. I found similarities in the keyboards and soaring guitars even if one has a great singer (K) and the other an ordinary but distinctive singer (p)

So i would suggest if you like Pendragon you may like Karnataka.

If you like Yes try Genesis or Rush and.........

If you Like ELP try VDGG and.........

If you like IQ try........... and so on.

Thanks in advance.

interesting, because I love VDGG, but dislike ELP

and I like Yes, but I don't really like Genesis (they're alright) or Rush (they're boring)

So much for your suggestions... sorry

Here are some from me:
- If you like Magma try Weidorje
- If you like King Crimson try Bi Kyo Ran
- If you like Echolyn try Gentle Giant (NOT the other way around)
- If you like VDGG try Peter Hammill
- If you like Porcupine Tree try Opeth's "Damnation" album
- If you like Marillion try something more interesting

If you like Symphonic Melodious Italian Prog (PFM, Banco etc) try Harmonium ...

If you like Pink Floyd ... try Mostly Autumn or Eloy or Porcupine Tree

While I do agree with this premise of this thread, I couldn't help thinking that I wish the people OUTSIDE of our prog world would benefit more from this type of help, since many of them like Genesis, Floyd, Yes etc..but are completely unaware that bands STILL exist that play that kind of music. I think that, because it seems everytime I play a Marillion, Porcupine tree or Spocks beard song..people that have ZERO clue about prog tend to like the music. It seems our musics growth is stunted somehow...having said that, it would be the WORST thing for prog to let the music industry get hold of it again like they did in the late 70s, otherwise it would collapse again.

No, I dont know where Im going with this either...
