Topic: Prog Fashion Posted: July 25 2015 at 00:12 |
Back in the 1970s, I thought that the British prog artists had the best rock stage fashion by far! American rockers were all about bell-bottom blue jeans and tee shirts, while the Brits were into all sorts of classical and futuristic stage garb. This made for a very entertaining performance in addition to the music!
Post some pictures of your favorites! This was how Squire was dressed when I saw the CTTE concert in Chicago, 22 September, 1972....as a young kid, I really dug those boots!!

You can't talk prog fashion without talking Tull. I took these shots on the '78 tour when Ian was doing his country gentleman look. The 2nd shot is Tony Williams (who was filling in for John Glascock on the same tour) doing the country squire riding thing. The 3rd showcases Ian's country look with Martin's penchant for flower print suits and a bow tie...that's style!

Hell yeah! Thanks for posting! I saw TAAB and Minstrel tours, and your observations about Ian's styles are on the money!
Jeffery Hammond-Hammond was always dapper and fully engaged! He ruled that stage!

I saw Jethro Tull for the first time at that tour, in Belgrade, in April 1975. I remember that I been impressed with their costumes.

I don't know of them, but they had a nice stage fashion vibe! I used to really dig the platform shoes!
Glenn Cornick had a great pair of platforms on when his band Wild Turkey opened for Tull's TAAB show in Chicago! 10 October, 1972! Here's some really old Tull!

I really dig the 70s English fashion sense. I love the classy coat and matching pants. It's the sort of attire I'd wear playing on stage (if that day ever comes!) and even out and about if I ever start seriously caring about my fashion :P
The keyboard players seemed to have the look I liked. To single one out, John Tout always had the look I liked. Here's a poor screenshot of him playing live in 1977 - unfortunately there's not much to work with.
I don't know. I just LOVE those coats... and robes and stuff.
A man I'm not entirely familiar with, but what I am - I quite like. And he looks GOOD. Greg Lake
Finally, I can't forget these guys...
While digging for a nice photo of Hackett I can't find, I found this gem of a picture of them in 1975. Fashion here is QUITE scattered. I love the style Gabriel has here and Steve isn't bad either if his hair wasn't blowing in the wind :) trench coat fits Mike well too. Tony and Phil kinda have that regular look as usual. Funny picture too, Tony and Pete are being mean! :D

I think generally the words "prog" and "fashion" are mutually exclusive.

Yeah, it's oxymoron time, folks. When I see old prog videos from the 1970s, I think: thank goodness the music survived and the clothes didn't. How awful if it had been the other way round.

Pure class. Mind you I get strange looks when I wear my Dave Hill costume on the train.

I really dig the old school 70s look. I use it myself actually (only mixed with a bit of punk, sportswear and silly t-shirts).....................but those old cats had nothing on the new kids on the block. Now this is prog (fashion)!!!!!

Yes did a great job of generating some futuristic fashions that were a fusion of classic and modern designs!
Howe wore this cape for the Relayer and Solo Album tours, in this shot he's playing "Ritual" since he is using his Les Paul Junior guitar!
