Topic: Masterpieces from Rock Progressif Québécois Posted: February 02 2015 at 08:48 |
Which prog albums from Québec are true standouts in your opinion? I'd like to extend my culture in prog music from my native land, as I really just know the greatest classics. Also, I only want bands who sing in french (or who are only instrumental). These are my own favorites:
Harmonium - Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison Maneige - Les Porches Maneige - Maneige Pollen - Pollen Maneige - Ni Vent... Ni Nouvelle Harmonium - L'Heptade Morse Code - La Marche des Hommes

I'd add anything and everything by Godspeed You! Black Emperor to that list.

You already mentioned the big ones. Stuff like Conventum, Sloche and Opus 5 might be worth checking out as well.
Also, June Wallack. Wish there was a re-release of this as there has been for other ProgQuebec records.

I highly recommend L'Orchestre Sympathique's En Concert À La Grande Passe. Beautiful instrumental jazz rock where the dominant voices are Jean Vanasse's vibraphone and François Richard's acoustic piano and flute.

Miriodor - Avanti! (2009). One of the best albums of the past 15 years, from one of the best bands I have ever seen on stage. Though the band are labeled as RIO/Avant, they appeal to fans of symphonic prog as well because of their great sense of melody.

Ok I just checked that out, they are from Québec indeed. The name of the album seemed italian to me.

They are from Quebec, and I met them and spoke French with them at ProgDay 2013. However, the album title is indeed Italian, and means "forward".
