Where? The claim seems utterly ridiculous to me. |
To name one:
"Ghost of Perdition", when he sings "Darkness by her
side/Spoke and passed her by". The drums are pretty similar to Tools.
Also the end of "Beneath the Mire", and there are more.
I also remember, around the time the album was being produced,
Mikael had Laterelus in his playlist. And he's been praising them
countless times in interviews. I'm sure he borrowed some influence, and
I'm not criticising. Ghost Reveries was my favorite Opeth album for
months.

what he said and I said previously...
of course, one can't forget Opeth's use of the Camel song Never Let Go in Benighted
a fine tribute i think

Alright but they are in fact moments. I thought you were trying to suggest something on a grander scale.

Nope. Only in rare cases.

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

It's a hard decision, but I'll vote for Mikael Åkerfeldt. He's a great composer, guitar player, singer and growler.

Overall Steve Wilson, but if it comes to metal then i prefer Ghost Reveries over Deadwing.

All our old stuff should be available in the US through Navarre distribution, but of course I'm disappointed to hear that even one person had trouble finding it, that's not good. Stupid Dream has just been reissued as a 2 disc set, with a 5.1 surround sound mix added to a pristine stereo remaster. Lightbulb Sun will get the same treatment sometime next year - I just need to get around to doing the 5.1.

How about making a start in January? Seriously. I've wanted a copy for the last couple of years. It's a shame the album has been unavailable for so long. The fact that the second-hand price is as high as it is should tell you something.

I was really lucky as I managed to pick up a brand new copy of Lightbulb Sun last year for less than £10.

Wilson. You'll never hear anything like "Begonia seduction scene" comming from Opeth.
And... it is actually very nice to see some posts of Mr. Wilson. I really enjoy PT early albums. Sadly, from "Lightbulb Sun", I stop enjoying. Hopefully, more experimental sounds will come from other projects that I still havent got.

Mikael Akerfeld, but only just.
I am yet to get Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. They're very hard to
get hold of here in New Zealand. My friend is trying to get them for
me, i am dying to hear them. I cant wait to hear the studio version of
Russia On Ice. I love that song.

Difficult one -
Opeth & Porcupine Tree are both great bands, but overall, I'd say Opeth have had a more limited sound over the years - PT, however have gone from tranced out LSD madness with 'Voyage 34' through god knows how many styles, but retained quality control, so overall - Steve Wilson (who in a way, introduced me to Opeth via his production work on 'Damnation', from which I discovered Opeth's other works...).
I still say Porcupine Tree are prog-rock, though

I voted for Akerfeldt. Steve Wilson's albums sometimes feel 'over-produced' to me.

My vote goes for Steve Wilson.
(But Mikael Åkerfeldt is another genius).
Let's not forget the importance that Steve Wilson had in Opeth's sound change... Even we can notice it at present (Ghost Reveries), in spite of that already he does not work with them...
Also Wilson took Opeth's certain influence. This provoked that " In absence " and "Deadwing" had stronger moments...

A hadr choice indeed. They are both great musicians and composers. Opeh is influenced by Pocupine Tree and Porcupine Tree is infuenced by Opeth But I guess Wilson can`t growl so my vote goes to Akerfledt

I like Opeth a lot, but I honestly think Wilson is miles ahead as a songwriter. Add to that his skills as a producer and the choice is easy.

Even though I really love Ghost Reveries, I'll be damned if it's not Opeth's most overproduced album, even though Wilson did not work on it.
