Under Lewian's nomination, you'll see a comment that says "minus one vote".  Because of the response we had on this poll, I ended up needing all of the slots, so I had to use one that had a misplaced vote in it.  Unfortunately, it fell on Lewian's entry.  If someone who votes on his entry will please not submit a vote, we'll count that vote and I'll remove the comment.  Let me know if you do that and your vote will count as the one that was misplaced there.  Sorry about the confusion.

We could get around the troll voting issue by having two articles for each Interactive Poll. One for the song suggestions (without a poll), and one for the actual nominations (with the poll) - the latter should of course be posted only after everyone has made his/her song choice. This way we can make the poll with all the nominations at once, and without empty spaces.

Here's a playlist except for Nick's which is on Bandcamp. I'll see if I can hunt down his link and add it to my post. Doing this on my phone.

Ah, I misread that.  Nonetheless, still hadn't heard this piece, and no wonder I didn't remember it from that.   Smile

Oh, Lucky Lewian, he's already a vote ahead. But he will need it...Tongue

Thanks for the playlist, George!

First thoughts, pages 3 & 4, with a few additions:
suitkees:  Tindersticks “Whiskey & Water”  And back to rock, washy guitars, drums and keyboards set the stage for drama here, it sounds like.  Twangy lead guitar and maybe some violin, it sounds like.  Spoken vocal.  I really love the drama of the music, not so much, the vocal.  Song ends in a bit of chaotic cacophony (in a very good way, to my ear), and goes back into the main melody before it ends abruptly.  Moon Ate The Dark “She / Swimming”  Lovely piano beginning, slowly building and becoming very gradually more complex.  Very contemplative and minimalist feel, we’ll see if that continues.  Some electronic shimmers are added in and softly swell.  Piece softly finishes.  Beautiful!  Jean-Louis “À la morte fontaine”  And now we have a somewhat folky-raga feel with guitar and drums.  So, a song of being enchanted by a water-spirit, I would think from the hint of your lyrics.  An excellent choice, at least for my taste.  Angelo Branduardi “La pulce d’acqua”  Pretty acoustic guitar and a lilting vocal with happy woodwinds, and later, full orchestra, makes me think of water sprites dancing along sun-lit waters. A Renaissance-era feel to it.

Thanks Nickie! I was sure you would like Moon ate the Dark! Glad you also like Jean-Louis Murat, he is navigating a bit between rock, pop, blues and renaissance music, depending a bit on what album you have at hand, putting this in his signature mix of music... Tindersticks, I guess, are a bit of an acquired taste (including his singing), but I like them very much.

Just going slightly off-topic here. Nickie, if you liked the Branduardi song, you should check out the whole album, and possibly his whole output, which I believe would appeal to you.  I reviewed the album a few years ago, and the artist's bio was a husband-wife joint venture LOL. Here's the review: http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=205254

Incidentally, I met Branduardi in 2004 at an event about Tolkien's work, and even had to interpret for him (without any prior preparation, which was extremely stressful). I believe some of his albums have been translated into English (as well as French).

First bunch.

Patrick Watson - Here Comes the River. Very beautiful song, but I already knew it, so it will probably not be a contender for my votes.

The Gang - Dopo la Pioggia (After the Rain). It sounds like something from the 1990's, but it could potentially be more recent. There's a very sad vibe to it, which gets even the more sadder when you consider the lyrics. I like it.

Händel - Water Music. This I also knew in advance. To be honest, I am not usually a big fan of Händel. I prefer composers like Bach or Pergolesi when it comes to the late Baroque period.

Men at Work - Down By the Sea. They actually made other songs than "A Land Down Under"? It starts with an interesting drumbeat with some discreet synths in the background and some guitar notes too. The bass sets in along with the vocals. There's a bit of new wave in it, and it sounds like song Sting might have written. Fine song, and a possible contender. The production has just a little too much trebble for my taste.

Saigon Kick - Water sounds very 90's-like. Perhaps there's a bit of britpop in it. I especially like the lead guitar that circles between the left and right channel. Unfortunately I am no fan of gospel, so the last minute does not appeal to me.

There always has to be one smart a$$ is probably the most radical track in this poll so far, but it seems to be a popular choice already. I can't hear a thing, but I guess that is part of the concept... like John Cage's 4:33...

Thank you, Raff....The entire album sounds definitely of interest after reading your review, I will certainly go deeper into it.  Funny how you run into unexpected people at events/parties (even an oblique Tolkien reference there).  Smile
And thank you to suitkees for bringing it here.

The actual song is like a traditional folk ballad, a bit melancholic. I don't really know if it actually is a traditional song, or just written in that style, but I really like it. Contender.

Very pleased that Lowlands caught your ear(s).

It is definitely a traditional song (Scottish) and has been covered many times, but this is the first time I've heard it done in this way.  The bowed instrument is an erhu, a Chinese violin-like instrument and I do believe that is a bouzouki that you hear, as there is one credited on the album.  It's a wonderful recording, music in many styles.

And lol on on the smart a$$ piece of work.  LOL

I wholeheartedly agree with Raff.  Branduardi is an amazing musician and vocalist who utilizes some very cool instruments and styles in his writing.  He is one of my favorite artists and he's one that would appeal to you Nickie.

And that is one of the beauties of this poll, those who have participated for a while come to know the other voters' tastes and make suggestions to each other, based on that.  Also, my ears have been opened to new sorts of music I would possibly not have really been exposed to in this way, nor listened to as intently.  Clap

Second batch:

Blind Faith - Sea of Joy. I of course knew about Blind Faith and who were in the band. But it's the first time I actually hear what they sounded like. Very enjoyable listen.

Radiopuhelimet - Jäämeri. I've heard of this band, but not been listening to it before. Raw and unpolished punk rock. The vocals are a little too much, but the music is absolutely interesting.

PJ Harvey - The River is quite lo-fi with a muddy production and a hypnotic intensity. Poetic lyrics too. Strong contender.

Gustava Santoalalla - Iguazú begins with finger-picked guitar of sorts. There's also a violin. There's a lot of "water floating" in the music here. Beautiful, and a possible contender too.
