the Circus Maximus thing is kind of ironic, seeing as how Circus Maximus started off by being a Dream Theater/Symphony X cover band LOL

Dream Theater has been know to give nods to some of their favorite bands and influences. It could be that the cover is quite intentional in copying those two bands.

I remember the first time I hear "The Wall" by Kansas I was like "HEY THIS IS A RIPOFF OF SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE" and then I realized The Wall was written near 30 years prior. LOL
Indeed they pay much respect to their influence, and now perhaps their fans?

I wouldn't doubt it. The boys have a pretty wide base of influence, even as narrow minded as their music might seem.

They must also like The Flower Kings........the begining of Last Minute on Earth from The Rainmaker has the same 'Shaman' dude singing as on Bridges In the Sky. He must be in high demand these days.....

Less insane tom filling, cymbal crashing and double kick drum clatter combined with a more up-front Rudess makes for a more satisfying DT experience all round, I say. Lyrics are kinda daft and clunky in places, as par for the course (though miles better than the D&D gobbldigook of SC). On balance, though this is their strongest set since Octavarium.

Only real gripes are a little too much noodling in places and Rudess' plainly odd and occasionally inappropriate synth noises (again, par for the course with this band) but neither are that devastating to overall quality.

I really didn't expect to like it as much as I do and I was certain both Opeth and Steven Wilson's new ones were going to trounce it in the Album Of The Year stakes. Actually, as worthy as those albums are, both this and Mastodon pick up loads of points for just being fun and uplifting to listen to.

Mike who?

As I recently got The Rainmaker, I found this a little amusing.

Also, Bridges In The Sky has the choir sounds similar to some other Flower Kings epic, I think Garden of Dreams (?)

Really! I thought the track Breaking All illusions was alone much better than the entire Black Clouds album.

My favourite album of this year is either Heritage by Opeth, or Grace For Drowning by Steven Wilson; both are exceptional; but the new DT is also of very high quality. A great return to form. I think it's been a marvellous year for music.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

I love BC&SL...to me its the more prog metal, story telling that I like about BC&SL. ADToE is more that symph/prog that I like about Octavarium and SDoIT also SFAM.

But to me for DT prog metal I enjoy Train of Thought more than BC&SL. Endless Sacrifice, In the Name of God and Stream of Cons are DT at their prog metal best.

I love BC&SL. It does some things better than their new album, such as the killer opening and nice mix of some real heavy stuff and more melodic, uplifting moments; but A Dramatic Turn of Events is an overall better effort in my opinion.

It is a good song indeed, but forgetable IMO.

Answering you both:

The thing I love about Dream Theater is that, every album, they come up with something new. EVERY album. I do agree that Systematic and Black Clouds had some points of contact, but those were the shorter songs (the ones written to be singles). Dramatic Turns, for its turn, seems generic: every time I listen to the album I think about some song from either the Kevin Moore or Derek Sherinian years and I do not like that; Dream Theater were supposed to be an original band, with original ideas every album they put out and I don't see that many new things here.

This is the first album since Falling into Infinity I have troubles getting through it all in one piece: I usually skip songs, which is something I don't do in any of their other albums!

Don't get me wrong, it isn't a bad album,  but it isn't very good either, just average. The thing is, in my opinion, the album has recieved so much praise  because it does not take any risk at all, they play it safe all along! If you like more of the same, then fine, it is your thing; I like it myself some times. However, Dream Thetare is one of the few bands that I simply did not expected this kind of thing to happen at all, which is why I am so disappointed with this album.

I can think of a few moments that are new for DT on the new album. For one, how about the "tickle" section during the intro of Lost Not Forgotten? Or most of Bridges In The Sky?

I admit, however, that they could have mixed it up in the structure/arrangement department.

The new DT album is a good album, 3.5*

I didn't like BCaSL. It seemed uninspired and bland.

I also wish DT could spend more than 10min on album artwork.
