Iván, you do understand Proto-Prog don't you? I mean you did write the definition...

Quote
These bands normally were formed and released albums before Progressive Rock had completely developed (there are some rare Proto Prog bands from the early 70’s, because the genre didn’t expanded to all the Continents simultaneously

The common elements in all these bands is that they developed one or more elements of Prog, and even when not completely defined as part of the genre, they are without any doubt, an important stage in the evolution of Progressive Rock.

Generally, Proto Prog bands are the direct link between Psyche and Prog and for that reason the Psychedelic components are present in the vast majority of them, but being that Progressive Rock was born from the blending of different genres, we have broadened the definition to cover any band that combined some elements of Progressive Rock with other genres prior to 1970.

This seems to sit easily with the ProgEars review:

Quote Jimi's debut, Are You Experienced?, Jimi would create on of the finest examples of psychedelia ever created during the entire decade of the Sixties. This was rock music's progression to it best, which still caught in it's caught in short song formation, but the advancement in technology helped open doors to the highly experimental mind of Jimi as a songwriter, and his outer world guitar pyrotechnics.

Yes Tony, but first one thuing, I'm no longer against his inclusion, despite this, I believe he's more a Prog Related artist than a Proto Prog,.

The Progressiveears review says nothing about Proto Prog says three things:
  1. He's a Psyche artist: True, but  never says Prog Psyche, as Eetu well defined in his review, I even believe that Psyche is a beter place than proto Prog for Hendrix.
  2. Progressiveears also says that "This was rock music's progression to it best" they clearly say progressing to their bast, improving, developing, not taking towards Prog, as it may seem.
  3. He was an experimental songwriter (Sometrhing with what i disagree), but experimental doesn't mean Prog or Proto Prog.

As I said, I'm not uncomfortable witth his addition anymore (read my review about Electric ladyland), I don't believe he's a Proto Prog artist, he has some relation with Prog, he influenced everybody after him (Rock, Blues, Folk, Pop and Prog), but he's not an integral part of the prog genre, and I believe Proto Prog is already a Prog sub-genre.

People seem to believe Proto Prog is the Prog Related of the 60's, I believe is a Prog sub-genre by own right, and for that reason only Prog artists (with clear Prog elements and not just influential) should be there.

I know it won't happen, but Hendrix in Prog Related is much more acurate IMHO, even Psyche fits more.

Iván

BTW: GEPR has proto Prog

Quote Proto-Progressive
Where late 60s psych ends and early 70s progressive rock begins is often referred to as proto-progressive, due to the music's embryonic similarities to the earliest progressive rock groups. While this is accurate as far as the definition of "proto-" goes, another common definition of this term is sort of as "almost progressive," artists which might bear some resemblance to the genre, but are not commonly considered as such. Some widely varying examples of what might be considered "proto-prog" are The Beatles circa Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers ..., Tommy and Quadrophenia period Who, Procol Harum, Traffic, early Deep Purple and Uriah Heep.

Again the omision of Hendrix is clear

Proggnosis has a lot of sub-genres and they have Proto Prog as EARLY PROGRESSIVE.

UK-England The Nice
Genre-SubGenre-Style: PROGRESSIVE ROCK (Early Progressive Classical)

I don't know what max had in mind, but I didn't add hendrix for his guitar playing, I added him because his use of complicated structure in rock as early as 67 and 68. Aint no Tellin is a mini blueprint for that rapid fire riff based changes style of prog practiced by Yes and 70s Zappa.

Also 1983, Burning the Midnight Lamp, Girl so Fine, 3rd Stone and others.

This plus his huge impact on the early prog scene.

Proto-Prog is for NON PROG bands. The whole thing we have been trying to get across to people is that bands added to Proto/Prog-Related are NOT considered Prog bands by this site.

Chris...Since when is discussion wrong?

I believe respectful debate is what makes ths site what it is.

Honestly, despite whatever is said, I always seen Proto Prog as Prog with almost all the elements, not just related, or if you want a step before Prog, while Prog Related is just a relation.

Discussion is not wrong  - putting down people's work is. While Ivan is someone who can discuss respectfully and intelligently, other people can't.

^^ Ivan, I never once assumed anyone could not discuss it. I was speaking on a personal level only and no inference intended otherwise to the matter. You are right our debates/discussions are what lends credibility to the site, I was merely agreeing with Tony on the proto prog issue.

Discuss away.....I am just however thrilled that Hendrix contributes to the well being of this richly ' intellectually" invested site.
