What a strange poll! All the top bands could have fans claiming them to be the best. It is all down to taste. Prog metal is not my cup of tea really, I find it can be very juvenile. But I acknowledge that others love it. However, having heard, over the years, two DT albums, (can't remember their names now) my opinion was that they were a second rate Rush, the difference being that DT's songs were longer. Now, Rush are not my favourite band, but I do have their albums, and enjoy some of them, so they would always get my vote above any other band in that genre. But DT don't sound much different to me than a thousand other bands with loud guitars and pseudo-intellectual lyrics. Therefore, I have, of course, voted no in the poll. But there is no ultimate answer in such a poll, as all fans will vote for their own fave bands. If we could come back to Earth in, say, a hundred years, then we might see which bands have survived the best. That is the closest we could come to a definitive answer, yet even that wouldn't suffice a hundred percent.

Does that offend you?
I mean, I'm into Yes, Mike Oldfield, Rush, Marillion, Jethro Tull and Van Der Graff Generator, but I can't help it if Dream Theater are my fave band and I like all their albums.
Oh, I forgot... Genesis, ELP and Frank Zappa are not amoung my personal favourites, so I guess I'm not really into prog and my opinion doesn't matter.

Returning to the thread subject... I think that DT will end up being looked back on kind of in the same way that ELP is today. They'll have a fiercely devoted fanbase who go berserk and start throwing things at even the faintest negative mention of the band, but at the same time they'll be widely regarded as a prime example of what's wrong with prog and tons of people will view them more or less as a joke.

No, it doesn't offend me at all, it0's your taste. But it's an example of how narrow can be the perspective of those who call us narrow minded.
If you just read my whole quote before the list you'll find it was a complement to another member's opinion.

Iron Maiden were one of the stalwarts of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the early 1980s - of course they're metal!

Yes I know they were, but that was a press description for all the bands of that time. I dont have to agree with everything the press says. i think theres room for discussion on this.

Holy God, you're stubborn, well let me inform you that the rest of the world doesn't have to agree with what only you say.

Erm... not all bands at that time were described as heavy metal, Snow Dog...
Are you seriously saying that you didn't think that "Running Free" was metal? "Run to the Hills"? "Number of the Beast"? "Aces High"? The later stuff (which I don't listen to as it all sounds the same)?
I never thought Led Zep were metal though, depite the "Lead" connection - they were heavy rock/progressive blues with a dash of folk. Real metal bands NEVER played folk (except Spinal Tap in the intro to "Stonehenge"...)
Black Sabbath's roots in the heavy blues bands are easy to hear - Blue Cheer, Spooky Tooth, Bakerloo and May Blitz all played Sabbath-sounding riffs - and they pre-date Sabbath. Strictly, Sabbath aren't really metal, as they're too blues based. The same goes for AC/DC.
However, heavy is good
You're right - we need some threads on heavy metal/rock. Probably in the "Not Related to (prog) Music" section though...

I think it isn't stupid to be a fan of DT or any prog metal band. If the main characteristic of prog are the changes, why do we have to put a limit to the change, for example only in the time during a track or an album. As snow dog said DT defined what prog metal is, and Rush is their biggest influence, but they incorporated they own hevier style, so there's a change.
Even when they have albums I don't like (falling into infinity and 6 degrees) and i'm listening to ayreon, asia, arena, yes, jethro, ect.. i mean some of the classics and something newer, DT still my favorite. Live at Bodokan DVD is amazing, they still blow my mind.
So maybe I could say they're the best Prog Metal band. I would say Yes is the best Prog Symphonic Rock, etc. But I can't compare them.
By the way, to whoever told it ... I saw too the Yes with very special guest Dream Theater, it is true that DT was opening the concert to Yes, but that was the pospouse a Yes planned possibly last tour inviting one of the best nowdays bands, so... what's wrong with opening for the people you grew listening to???

Def Leppard were in the second wave of NWOBHM - and yes, they were metal. Their first 2 albums are progressive to an extent - but Pyromania (arguably their best work) is pure metal as defined in the 1980s, before Metallica came along and redefined it.

Until that point I absolutely agree Pakish, everybody is entitled to their own taste and making a choice can't almost never be stupid (Well a 50 years guy fan of Britney or N'Sync would be stupid ).

You had to be there.
Way!
I saw Def Leppard supporting AC/DC, and Leppard were in top metal form.
Don't forget that metal means something else, now that Metallica have redefined it (twice!).
Have you heard Leppard's 1st 3 albums?
