The fastest guitarist? Damon Hill.

Wrong. That would be Jacques Villeneuve. He sucks at guitar, though.

Maybe this has been mentioned, but it depends on the kind of speed one means. There are many ways, techniques and tricks a guitarist has at his disposal (as Certif1ed correctly likes to point out from time to time) that will produce a flurry of notes. The speed Yngwie achieves is a whole different animal than what Holdsworth does.. the speed Petrucci shows is completely different than the speed of EVH or DiMeola or Buckethead, and on and on. Viv Campbell was a monster speedster, one of the fastest, but not nearly as accomplished as Vai or Satriani.
This concludes my silly rant..

Guitar solo on Deep Purple's (studio) "Child in Time". 1970. Also my favorite guitar solo ever. Unusually fast playing, yet the solo is sufficiently long and satisfying. That solo by Ritchie Blackmore gets 6-stars on a five-star scale.
Also, notice how the guitar solo on "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" - Genesis and three year later - sounds like an abbreviated spin-off of it. |
Thanks for that heads-up! I'll have to listen for that the next time...

Speed isn't everything. I'm reminded of the fable of the tortoise and the hare - both were rubbish guitarists on account of they couldn't master sweep-picking.
Steve Hillage on It's All Too Much - anything faster than that is just plain silly.

That's easy. A song that I still listen to, from time to time, in my head. Or, as I like to say, still I hear...BURN.
The song that essentially turned me on to Deep Purple (although it was "Hush," not "Smoke on the Water," that got me interested).

zzzzzz
Half the guitarists mentioned here I would consider rubbish, wow you can play fast... big deal it sounds rubbish and generic.
Creativity is far better, so take your Batio's, Malmsteens and Gilberts and hope they don't inflict more musical pain ever again

this may be true, but has nothing to do with the fact that the thread's about speedy guitar solos

Playing fast is not pointless. It is a way for a technical guitarist to showcase their abilities on a level that other guitarists can't. There are some speedy players who do boring things like shred nonstop: (Yngwie, Michael Angelo Batio, etc.) But there are also amazing guitar players who shred simply because they can. They're not showing off, they are adding a level of musical ability that others can't reach and it is not okay to judge someone's (or a group of people's) playing just because you don't understand, or are jealous.
