Yeah, Carrie is pretty awful I'd agree.  But also I find Nick's song, Looking For Answers to be quite terrible as well.  But then, Snow is my least favorite thing that Morse ever did (well, tied with the Day For Night album, but that at least has the title track which is quite good).  Strangely enough, even though I don't much care for the album, I agree with Tom about the last half of the second CD (Freak Boy to the end) being the best part.  The Overtures are pretty cool too, but that is to be expected from Morse.

By the way Tom, The Great Nothing was actually written years before All Of the Above.  Back when "V" came out, I read an interview with Neal where he stated that he had written The Great Nothing years before (I don't think he gave an exact year).  All Of The Above was, I believe, a new song at the time that he was just putting together and decided to present to the TA boys.

Which all just goes to reinforce my idea of the "patented Neal Morse prog formula".  Which I happen to mostly love.  Perhaps my problem with Snow is that it is a bit of a departure form that formula?  Possibly, but most of the album retains that formula, just far less successfully than his other albums IMO.

^ Hey Jeff,

Unrelated to the Flower Kings, I've been really getting into Vanden Plas lately.  With your progressive metal leanings as of late, I figured you'd be all over them.  I have "Christ 0" and "The God Thing", what should I get next?

It's early doors and I'm hoping that somebody else will vote YES....
Have we discovered a hornets nest of Manilow fans?
Serously I hope you lot are just taking the piss, because I find the idea of grown men liking Mr Concorde truly horrible, you'll all be telling me he's ace live or some such nonsense.
Even my Mrs hates Barry Manilow and she likes WESTLIFE...............

I'd recommend the Abydos album, which is the solo project from Vanden Plas' singer (his name eludes me at the moment).

Hmm, I'll have to consider that, though it was more the guitar and keyboard players that impressed me rather than the lead singer.  It's not like the lead singer was bad, I just didn't find him to be compelling.  I liked the tightness of the band and the melodies of their solos.

Thank you though for the recommendation Scott,

Tom,

If you're liking those, I first recommend checking out the rest of their discography. All of their albums except for "AcCult" are really good. One of my personal favorites from them is "Beyond Daylight".

Aside from their discography, you might want to check Brazilian Prog-Metal band Mindflow. Melodic prog metal with powerful keyboards and guitars. All of their albums can be obtained for free on their website:

^ eh, I've gotten over that.  It's a cost thing for me.  If I can buy, or legally obtain a free download for cheaper then getting the CD and having it shipped to the states then I will.  If after the fact, I really like it, I'll eventually buy the CD as well.

As far as books, I have absolutely no problem with the library.  My wife likes to own them but me, I'm comfortable borrowing.

I haven't listened to VP in a couple of years, but I do recall liking all of their albums; I'm just not sure which one I'd recommend next.  I kind of enjoyed the Abydos album even more than the VP albums, although to be honest, it seemed to be in a similar vein, except that it is a concept album, that he was aslo going to turn into a stage production.  I don't know if anything ever happened with that or not.  I think that I heard that it was performed as a stage production in Germany, or something along those lines.

I voted YES.  Manilow was good at what he did I suppose, but that sort of music makes me want to vomit quite frankly.  Also, did you guys know he didn't write most of his "hits"?  (maybe any of them, I can't recall)  So much for being talented (though I suppose he could sing on key, and play decent piano).
