That's pretty impressive, coming from the age when the average domestic gramophone was still clockwork with an acoustic pick-up. Magnetic pickups that would connect into the "GRAM" input of a radio set were just becoming available but they were very expensive. Most radio sets didn't even have a GRAM input and most of those would not have had an input selector, often you just de-tuned the radio to a blank spot between stations. Only radiograms with combined radio and gramophones had input selector switches. Judging by the set-up and location I'd guess he was using the portable radio receiver as an amplifier, the microphone would then be part of the radio station studio to broadcast the recordings over the airways. Quite why they didn't simply connect the turntables directly is anyone's guess, but mine would be that the studio engineer didn't want them to. I have an acoustic pick-up and a tin of needles somewhere in the attic that I acquired in the late 60s, and think I may still have a few 78s too. Back then you could find clockwork/acoustic record-players very easily (and cheaply) in church Bring-and-Buy sales even though electric record-players had been around since the 50s. Here is a Thorens wind-up portable turntable from 1932: ![]() |

I listen to my music in two ways -
1) My apple mac 2) Naim Unitilite via a pair of REGA RS3 - absolutely glorious sound - not the most expensive system out there, but can recommend most highly. My Hifi shop were shocked when I suggested that combination, they said you cannot put naim with rega, but after auditioning, they closed the shop and were impressed!!

CD, Spotify, Youtube, and Windows Media Player. that's about it. i listen to albums and songs daily (especially the latter), and sometimes just full album sides, 1st or 2nd (or any of how many there is in a specific album, if that makes sense).

1.) I use my computer to play my digital collection and Spotify on tiny desktop speakers + sub ... one of the speakers is blown so the sound is pretty off. Sometimes I plug in headphones but usually not.
2). I have a U-turn orbit turntable which I plug directly into my $99 receiver with phono input. Its not the best but it works for now. I have a pair of polk bookshelf speakers sitting on the floor that I play from. 3). Plug my phone into the aux port of my receiver and play from there I do most my listening at work with headphones on and I'm too cheap to do anything about my poor listening situation at home

Upgraded the headphone listening experience. Bought a new SS AMP and DAC to pair with my HD 800's and its sublime.
Soon I will be buying floorstand speakers with a power amp that can support 100W into 8 ohms :) |

Mostly through my various digital devices. If from my computer, I will run a direct-out to the PA in my bedroom, or simply use a pair of high-quality SONY studio headphones. I'd really, really like to acquire a decent turntable and start collecting the classics on vinyl once I have the income.

I don't know what you mean by "decent" but there are several entry level tables from Pro-ject, Music Hall, Denon, Marantz under US$400, some may include the cartridge. If not a very nice one can be had anywhere from $75-$120. Then you need to see if your current receiver/amp has Phono inputs, if not you will need a phono preamp, which can be had for about $150-$200. There is also the used market where you can get higher up for a bit less money than new. Enjoy! |
