Thanks Pierreolivier, very interesting article Thumbs%20Up, also because I own a red vinyl version of that bootleg LP entitled Forgotten Songs. I haven't heard it for more than 15 years, this evening I will give it a new try Wink

And it is true about the choir sound, that was the great thing on the M400 model. I read this in the books from Peter Forrest, I am sure you know these books more or less out of your headLOL

Easy Livin' advised me to put my Mellotron article on the BLOG section in order to save this article from disappearing in the deep vaults of Prog Archives, how does that sound to you, fellow Tron-maniacs?

Go for it!

I love the 'Tron. It was a major part of the King Crimson set-up and BJH and The Moody Blues would never have sounded the same without it.
There is a great site called Planet Mellotron dedicated to the instrument and lists and reviews countless band/artists who used it.

Of course the Mellotron is overrated, Snow Dog and it is also an unreliable instrument and it looks like an old piece of furniture but what would prog be without The Mighty Tron Unhappy ?

I'm not talking about its unreliablity, but its general sound. I do like it, but I prefer synths and the mighty Hammond!Wink

In the Symphonic Prog Appreciation Thread I will publish a Moog special and a Hammond organ special in the forthcoming months, it is based upon a huge 'vintage keyboards' article I wrote for a Dutch progrock magazine. It's embellished with quotes from known Dutch musicians I interviewed for this special. I am a Tron-maniac but the Moog and Hammond are mighty close Wink

The mellotron is simply wonderful! I didn't name myself Moogtron for nothing. My favourite mellotron moments:

* Genesis - Watcher Of The Skies (Genesis Live) (a cliche answer, I know, but it didn't become a cliche for nothing, now, did it?)
 
*  Beatles - Strawberry Fields
 
* IQ - the opening of Widow's Peak

Also relating to the mellotron I have heard the weirdest track with a mellotron. It is Boilk from Egg's debut. Very strange.

I have stopped my PA activities (except reading and answering my own threads on The Forum) because of the ridiculous 'left-to-right-right-to-left' lay-out that provokes RSI and irritates the eyesight Angry If M@X is willing to restore the normal lay-out my motivation will return.

Another weird thing about Egg  on their second album "The Polite Force",the piece that featured the Mellotron is also called "Boilk".

The moog was responsable for destroying Lucky Man and other initially great songsDead.

What a pity that Martin Offord decided to sell his Mellotron because he was fed up with it Unhappy When I am in a nostalgic or Tron-mood (almost simiar moods Wink ) I often love to watch the Live In London DVD from early IQ, loaded with The Mighty Tron (M400) Clap !

Some say the tron is overrated. I disagree. Its unique sound is exactly why it has survived. And its dark, gloomy sound has become a staple of progressive rock, especially the darker side of prog. The sound produced is timeless, and works well with the analog retro-symphonic bands such as Wobbler, as well as with modern prog bands such as Paatos, etc. Synths like the Mini-Moog is a classic analog synthesizer, but its sound has not stood the test of time, and it just sounds dated when listening to it now. I love the Mellotron so much that I am constantly seeking out bands that have used it in the past, as well as new bands that embrace the instrument. That's  why I love posts such as this, because I discover tron-bands that I was not aware of. Long live the mighty tron!Thumbs%20Up
