I just finished listening to the first two pages, lots of good stuff. I already knew The Comet is Coming and Le Grand Sbam. I'm curious to discover more from Nolan Porter, Organ Explosion, Vanishing Twin and Spencer Cullum Thumbs Up

Fantastic band, flew to London a couple of years ago to see them play a small church in London. Check out their associated band Arch Garrison and Craig Fortnam's solo album.

That would have been the Union Chapel in Islington. Fantastic venue, we saw the reformed Penguin Cafe Orchestra there in 2007 when they reformed to do a special concert on the 10th anniversary of Simon Jeffes death. It was spellbinding!!

It was St. Anne and St. Agnes in '17 with William D Drake supporting. Sight lines weren't great but music was sublime.

And I was there, too. Smile

That is indeed the usual, Ian (Top 3, and not your own selections).  It's always kind of a given that you'll enjoy your own entries. Some people decide they want additional criteria to choose winners, but that is entirely up to the individual (I prefer to vote for previously unheard material, as I'm not sure if they're faves because of familiarity or not....not for cover versions, when we've done those, if I've not heard the cover).

Definitely not one's own selection. I figure just by nominating it one has already voted for it in a sense. I tend not to vote for the known partially because it makes it easier to limit to three. Usually I would rather vote for more than three and narrowing it down can be hard. If I gained a new sense of appreciation (or deeper sense) for a track I had heard before, then I would be more likely to vote for it. And sometimes I will hear something that I have heard but don't really know well.

This is a really strong listing for me, which makes choosing just three hard.

On to my choices:

Kuunatic - "Titian". Loved this the more I listened to it. This is one artist I will need to explore more.

Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection - "My Protector": Loved this too and will explore more.

Fausto - "Como um Sonho Acordado": Just loved this too.

Battlestations - "Silencer" is superb.

Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - "A Wizard of the World": Really enjoyed this very much.

The Comet is Coming is very good, and "Bonny Light Horseman" and there are various others.

I had thought that I'd vote for North Sea Radio Orchestra "Berliner Luft" but I had heard it before and the selections were so strong that I opted to discount it (probably). Interestingly, NSRO is one of those in PA I've known for years but really only started to delve into this past year (and William D. Drake).

I've listened a few times and still don't know which to choose as top three. One of the best lists yet per my tastes, and all I found enjoyable in the playlist.

Okay, though I vacillated, right now I go:
Kuunatic - "Titian"
Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection - "My Protector"
Battlestations - "Silencer"

But I feel that some others equally deserved my vote, and I have more like a top six or seven.

Oh yes, this playlist makes up for a CD-length of splendid music! I now have a top 14... Ermm
So, will listen to it again, with much pleasure, to - cruelly - trim this down to three.

As always, very, very difficult choices to make.  Thank you so very much to Mike for the topic and for conducting the poll, for everyone participating, and of course, to Lorenzo for being the Grand Creator.

  1.       tigerfeet:  Paper Dolls “Pray For Rain This one had such a catchy chorus, I found myself hearing it in my mind’s ear for quite some time today, after a second listen.  So, in a very wide swing for me, I’m going bluegrass for the top spot.  Very diversely, here is a bluegrass band.  Very nice, not so much twang that I find it hard to listen to.  Excellent musicianship, I see they are from Nashville.  Well produced, could also be a singer/songwriter sort of song, if one wanted to pull it out of the country market.  Hearing it also potentially that way, and being a big fan of straight-ahead singer/songwriter genre assisted in it’s win here.  Also, if you’re chosen either VIRTA “On the Run” or 2002 “Sacred Mountain”, they’d have been in the running, too.  So you got the extra distinction of bringing 3 I would have listened to again for final determination.

2.        George: Here, I am placing this one 2nd.  I did go and check out the entire recording, which was not quite as ear-catching to me as this. But rated all on it’s own, here it is, in my estimation.  KUUNATIC  “Tītián”  Synths, making a sort of horn sound, almost.  The vocals are echoed and dreamy, very psychedelic feel here, these people have a certainty of what they are doing, that the previous band hasn’t quite hit on yet (at least for me).  A bit of whimsy, and even a little bit of a blues feel during the organ part just under 3 mins in.  Infectious.

3.        I prophesy disaster:  This band has such a sound of it’s own, even though one could categorize it one way or another, that it is very recognizable as itself brought it third place for me, here.  I am intrigued enough to go and listen to the whole thing, but haven’t as of yet.  Nolan Potter “A Wizard of the Wind”  Starts off with a light and airy feel.  The cover is very neo-paganistic.  They really have captured their own sound, at least with this, very hard to make a comparison, for description’s sake.  The guitars add meat to all of the flutes and soft vocals.  Nice electric lead about halfway in, with some whirly keyboards.  Also if you’d chosen, Pity In The City, might have played out differently for me as far as placement.

Honourable Mentions:

Mike:  Bonny Light Horseman “Bonny Light Horseman”

Lorenzo: Roberto Vecchioni  “Vorrei (I would)”

Christian:  Battlestations “Silencer”

If they’d chosen these, may have played out differently for me:

JD:  Nuclear Bird “Tyrannical Megalomaniac”

Kees:  Rozi Plain “Trouble”  or  All Them Witches “Internet”

Cristi:  Wear Your Wounds “Mercifully”

Ian:  Kaiju Eats Cheeseburgers, or Yazz Ahmed “Jamil Jamal

Greg:  Bruno Pernadas “Spaceway 70”

Samuel:  Bruno Pernadas “Theme Vision”

Note to Ronstein:  Nothing to do with being late, but I am familiar with both of your excellent North Sea Radio Orchestra selections, so will apply my personal caveat that music must be also new to me to vote for it.  Wonderful additions, however!

My podium:

1) Le Grand Sbam - "Vaisseau Monde": A wonderfully ramshackle piece, full of strengths and weaknesses, kitschy, naive, cultured and demented at the same time, but having a passion for the theater of the absurd, as you have already read, I am intrigued by this performance which, strictly speaking, is more theatrical than musical (My indecision was between the podium and the critics' grand prix but this piece deserves the gold medal).

2) Paper Dolls - "Pray for Rain": Substantially melodic piece, country, which is enhanced by the vocal performance of the singer and the engaging rhythm, arranged very well and in an essential way, with violin and electric mandolin

3) Bonny Light Horseman - "Bonny Light Horseman": great country track, simple, expressive, with sober arrangement and beautiful vocals - like the ones I like.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honorable mentions:

4) Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - "A Wizard of the World": unpredictable and unclassifiable piece, which reminds me of the pastel atmospheres of Canterbury scene.

5) Jonathan Hulten - "A Dance in the Road": another country track, in competition for the third place. Great atmosphere, near the end almost psychedelic.

7) The Comet is Coming - "Summon the Fire": A kind of funky blues worthy of Morphine

8) Fausto - "Como um Sonho Acordado": romantic and melancholy melody

-------------------------------------------------------------
Grand Public's Prize: Bijelo Dugme - "Tako ti je mala moja kad ljubi bosanac : fantastic song, worthy of Queen, kitsch both in the arrangement and in the clothing, a really enjoyable, funny piece, in fact a hard prog rock.

Grand Critic's Prize: North Sea Radio Orchestra - "Berliner Luft" this is the typical piece that juries like: refined, cultured, academic. In this case, I appreciate it intellectually but unfortunately it doesn't involve me.

Bonny Light Horseman - "Bonny Light Horseman"

Love the sauntering plodding of course, and acoustic guitar, this is awesome. Vocals are pure and captivating. The album is fantastic too. Aside and a separate project, they did a great version of Tim Buckly’s “Buzzin Fly”. Nice! This ones def a contender for me so far

Vanishing Twin - "Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life

Hypnotic and sensory stimulating. I really love this track Greg. It has so many subtle elements and a fine production.

Gaupa - "Where Emperors Grow

Why are there so many excellent Scandinavian bands out there? It is quite amazing how I find myself drawn to them more than any other worldly locations, musically wise. Good track and the movement is powerful enough and yet not overwhelming.

Jonathan Hulten - "A Dance in the Road"

He has such a good tone and engages my ear and makes me want to listen on and play it over and over. A good minds eye story and it journey along. Beautiful in its overall sound.

Roberto Vecchioni – "Vorrei"

Excellent intro before going into the main story. The lyrics were passionate of course and the song overall very enjoyable.

Bijelo Dugme - "Tako ti je mala moja kad ljubi bosanac

What a fresh change to listen to this and of course trying not to compare the music with western European music of the time. I had never heard of these guys and they have an interesting repertoire going from Rock to Prog to New Age.

The Comet is Coming - "Summon the Fire"

Reedy and dirty, its a great opening and then the drums come in and the song develops. I like the sound of what people are doing with jazz these days and I would go watch these guys live if I had the chance

Kuunatic - "Titian"

Interesting band, and interesting merge of musical genres. I found another video with the lyrics which were quite imaginative and of course dreamy and mystical. Enjoyed this one a lot and more so after a few listens.

Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection - "My Protector"

Thoughtful and bluesy start. The vocal comes in and arty and captivating. I was not expecting the vocals so made for an even more enjoyable experience first time around. Reminded me of a story I was reading recently about a person collecting pennies for 45 years in 5 gallon water jugs.

Le Grand Sbam - "Vaisseau Monde"

This was an exciting track and one to stimulate the senses for sure. Vocally as much as instrumentally/electronically. I enjoyed the dark whimsical theme. Freestyle live performance is where this would be something you would get addicted going to watch.

Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - "A Wizard of the World"

A really nice find. Great feel to this from the start and what a pulsing sound. Nice spacey feel and fuzzy guitar.

Fausto - "Como um Sonho Acordado"

I managed to find the English translation of the lyrics out there and enjoyed listening along reading them after my first initial listen without them. I like the story and it was more like an extended sonnet

Battlestations – "Silencer"

This one had me wading through (enjoyable) sludge for 3 mins before releasing me into the anticipated song. Enjoying the production and placement of sounds a LOT. The strings compliment and electronics well and I feel like the song is telling some kind of industrial story.

So far I have 4 or 5 in mind and will whittle them down shortly.

Thanks Nickie, Smile I chose this song, as conventional as it may seem, since the flowing melodic adventure struck me as one of the most delightful songs I had heard for some time.

Yes, just a perfect kind of song.  Not an epic type prog or classical thing (which I also love), but wonderfully executed.  Smile

Thank you Malcom. Wonderful write-ups on the music and I am very glad you appreciated my choice. I think it could have a certain appeal to some "psychonauts". I like its dreamy qualities and groove, and find the vocals when they do come beautiful. I did worry people might complain about the way it ends. It is an unusual track on its album that it takes so long before the vocals come in (which many might consider the pay-off), and then it sort of ends. Groove often is important to me, and I like how it shifts and changes, but despite not being very long, I could imagine many not being very patient when it starts. It has certain Krautrock-like qualities think Can and Neu! as does a lot of my favourite 90s up music. The band is reminiscent of ones that got started in the 90s like Stereolab (Dots and Loops similarities on that album with bleeps and bloops), Pram and Broadcast.

I just listened to every track, really great selection! There are three tracks that I liked particularly more and I will surely listen to the full albums:

Vanishing Twin - "Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life"
Kuunatic - "Titian" (will see if it's a candidate for Psych Rock)
Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - "A Wizard of the World"

Oh, and thanks for the comments on my nomination, I'm glad you liked it Approve

As said, this makes up for a fantastic playlist. I'm glad that some of my favourites were not nominated, because it would have become quite impossible to get to three votes (this is not a plea to open up to five votes, though!). So, my votes are decided on the question... no, on the decision which ones will find their way into my collection without further due. Others might need further exploration, but, guys 'n gals, this was a tremendous good poll! From the sheer fun of the prog 'n roll of Bijelo Dugme, the great riffs and singing of Gaupa, the avantgardism of Le Grand Sbam, the wonderful melodies and singing of Bonny Light Horseman, Jonathan Hulten, Roberto Vecchioni and Paper Dolls, the modern/Eastern psychedelics of Kuunatics to the wonderful sonic explorations and/or sheer musicality of the others...

My votes go to (in order of appearance):
- Vanishing Twin - "Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life"
- Fausto - "Como um Sonho Acordado"
- Battlestations - "Silencer"

I actually also wanted Le Grand Sbam and Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band on the podium; I have to listen to their respective albums, but I'm already quite sure they will find their way into my collection too.

Glad they were not nominated (I would have been teared apart...), but they will be entering my collection too: Organ Explosion, The KALI Trio, VIRTA and Spooky Cool. These polls are getting expensive... Smile Thumbs Up

1. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band
2. Spencer Cullum
3. Gaupa

Honorable mentions:
Vanishing Twins
Jonathan Hulten
Roberto Vecchioni
Paper Dolls

All of the entries were excellent.  I actually enjoyed them all.

Unfortunately, Le Grand Sbam, Battlestations and North Sea Radio Orchestra were out of the running for me since I'm already familiar with them, but all three of them were excellent selections.

I am happy that "Vorrei", a melodic Italian-style song, with a conventional arrangement, is appreciated, beyond the votes it takes. In this thread I occasionally share simple songs, without any particular eccentricity of arrangement, because I want to share with you the emotions that the melody and the expression of the voice gives me, and it is really nice that the members of an American prog site, who do not they speak Italian, are able to appreciate this too.
