Prog Britannia Ten: A-Z Album Links

Empire: a Crossover Prog band with a heart full of Soul, led by the "architect of prog", Peter Banks,  and also featuring the gorgeous soulful vocals of foxy lady, Sydney Foxx.
Empire recorded three superb albums in the mid-1970's - imaginatively titled Mark I, Mark II & Mark III - which wouldn't see release until the mid-1990's, followed by a contemporary 2020 tribute album recorded in memory of Peter Banks (1947-2013), released under the band name, The New Empire. Think of YES with a soulful female vocalist instead of Jon Anderson and that's the sound of The New Empire. Heart Smile

Fish (of Marillion) is coming up next. I noticed most of the songs on his solo albums are written by someone called "Dick", and I thought "Who on earth is Dick!??", until I discovered the real name of Fish is Derek Dick. It's no wonder he prefers to be known by his nickname instead. Tongue

Or you could just get "The Complete Recordings" which also includes "The Mars Tapes". It is relatively easy and inexpensive to purchase and I highly recommend it to lovers of the classic prog sound.

Thanks Hugh. Peter Banks' demo recordings on "The Mars Tapes" sound better than almost anything I hear played on the radio these days. Thumbs Up

hi, Paul... how are you?  awhile back I was sent the recent collections THE BEST OF PETER BANKS' EMPIRE & HARMONY IN DIVERSITY.  I have been playing them regularly since on SPACE PIRATE RADIO.  they are a good introduction to this phase of his work.  I imagine you will be listing FLASH here shortly?  my best to you.

Hello Guy. Thanks for dropping by. Flash are a band I featured awhile back in November last year on Prog Britannia Seven, although ideally, I'd like to have featured Empire and Flash together on the same channel if I'd known they were both Peter Banks' projects. I can rectify that now though by reposting all of the Flash album links again here. Smile

I've been on a diet of Fish for four straight days in a row, so it'll make a welcome change to move onto Gordon Giltrap tomorrow, and I'm happy to report that "Gordon's Alive!" Smile

Visionary guitarist Gordon Giltrap is coming up next and here's a couple of favourite quotes from the maestro.....

"There are no wrong notes in jazz - only improvisations." Tongue

"If I was in front of a firing squad, my last request would be..... ""Can I please tune up my 12-string guitar first."" LOL

Here's a song for those of us who are planning our summer holidays.....

Eddie Hardin & Pete York: the world's smallest big Jazz-Rock band never to grace the hallowed halls of Prog Archives, having already been rejected for inclusion here at least twice already. Confused

Coming soon.....

Progressive Metal band Iron Maiden, featuring singer Paul Di'Anno on their first two albums before tattooed millionaire and airline pilot Bruce Dickinson arrived on the scene. I must admit, I was half-expecting Iron Maiden's first album to be a 2-star bummer, but it's actually a 4-star bomber, and if you don't believe me, then have a listen to this...

Iron Maiden are not a progressive metal band, they were an influence on early progressive metal bands (that's why they are prog-related here on PA), that's true.

I'm not sure if you are baiting again or not knowing much on the subject. Confused

^ Admittedly, some of Iron Maiden's songs are more Regressive Metal than Progressive Metal  but I think you'll agree that Where Eagles Dare is a Progressive Metal classic, and what an awesome drum cover too! Thumbs Up

I'll get back to you when you're out of baiting-trolling mode. Ouch

There's no need to Run to the Hills just because you disagree with me again. Tongue

If you're still not convinced Iron Maiden are Progressive Metal, then have a listen to their epic Rime of the Ancient Mariner and tell me with a straight face that it's not progressive. Big smile

Again, that is why they are under prog-related.

^ You may not believe this, but I actually agree with three of your ratings and reviews for Iron Maiden's albums and your reviews are well-written too, considering that English isn't your first language. Thumbs Up

I couldn't help noticing you gave a dismal 1-star rating & review to Iron Maiden's Virtual XI album though - which I haven't listened to yet - so it doesn't bode well for me liking the album either. Tongue
