For the record, I found Pampered Menial flawless and it's probably my favorite album. The reviews are mixed on PA. Should a die-hard PM fan bother?

Life Cycle is a tech-thrash album in the vein of Watchtower's Control & Resistance. A Sense of Change is their best album, although not really metal. Still very melodic and complex though, heavily in the Rush vein. Perfect Symmetry and Parallels are must haves and two of FW's best albums, complex and melodic stuff. No Exit is rawer but still good. Rhapsody is the definition of extremely cheesy power-metal.

not bad at all, I would describe them as raw power metal with quite a few Helloween influences, mainly on the guitars
I'm a big fan of the band, but these two would be around 3 to 3.5 stars each
if you like to have sth from their first era, try "Tales from the Twilight World', much better
(if you don't already have it)

I don't have all Rhapsody albums and I would not recommend anyone to buy them. They seem too cheesy for me, even if they have some good elements and ideas. Mainly symphonic speedy power metal that you get tired after a while (IMO). You could try Legendary... or Symphony... to get a taste. I have heard that their latest is probably the best, not very typical power metal like the rest

BJ said a lot about Sieges Even, I would agree. Their first one is thrashy, closer to Watchtower sound, tech-metal with weird tunes. At least 3 stars. A Sense of Change is a masterpiece, highly recommended.

Fates Warning: all of them are at least excellent albums. Perfect Symmetry is perfect, Parallels is more commercial but still excellent, No Exit is more powerish but with grand moments. All highly recommended for prog-metal.

Again I would recommend all PTree, Up... and Sky.. are more 'psychedelic'/space rock, very deep and sophisticated. Signify is the turn to harder tunes but still has the touch of Floyd in it. At least 4 stars for each one.

Traffic (the only one I don't know)

BG, a night at the opera, first was a bit of a disappointment, but after careful listening is very good, not as good as Nightfall... or Imaginations... but still good and operatic Big%20smile

phew.... a few thoughts

An album or 2 from Rhapsody is alright. it will make no diffrence if you buy the whole discography coz it will all sound just the same, like most power metal bands. I remember when I a had a short phase of liking bands like Heavenly, Stratovarius, Hammerfall etc. I grew tired of listening to them coz of monotony. Though I still enjoy listening to some Stratovarius, Edguy,  and Hammerfall, but not as much as I used to. I sold most of my power metal purchases, glad someone bought it for a fair price.
 
This is my curiosity list:
Anything form Procol Harum, Nektar, Ulver and Post Metal/Avant Garde/Experimental Metal bsnda. I'm thinking Ulver. I hope they won't bore me.

I'm thinking of buying a combo consisting of:
 
Rush - Chronicles (2 CD compilation)
Rush - Presto
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime II
 
The combo is actually very cheap and I've never heard Queensryche before (and I predict this isn't a good starting point).

I think you should start with Operation Mindcrime from 1988, since it's alot better. But if Operation Mindcrime II is cheap, you could always try it.
Don't know about the Rush ones, i've never really got into them.

I have their first three, plus Tokyo Tales now. Got all of them at a dirt cheap price Big%20smile
They're excellent, and they'll help me to get into more speed/power-metal (progressive or not).

totally agreed, these particular bands are ok if you hear 1 or 2 albums, the rest will sound boring as you said (I have been through this phase and can't go back...)

do yourself a favour and but Ulver's Themes... it will change the way you listen to music!
check my review on the album and see if you like it, it's not very metal but it's as dark as it gets... I have another 2-3 albums by them, but this one is a hell of a masterpiece

I have not got into Presto yet, need to listen it several times to form an opinion

Not very bad but it can hardly go beyond 3 start IMHO... if you have heard OMI you will be disappointed
