As far as proggy proto-metal goes, I think I like Uriah Heep more than all three of those....

Sabbath. They have the most good albums.

Fair enough... personally I think Uriah Heep was interesting when they where at their best, but never a great band... personally

Once I readed in a guitar magazine... "Tony Iommi is the father of the riff".
And this is quite truth.... It's such a hard choice... but I think that Sabbath represents metal.

Sabbath for me. Wouldn't have expected Zeppelin to be so far in the lead, wow.

Gotta cast my vote for Black Sabbath, although Led Zepellin and Deep Purple are both incredible bands as well. Sabbath and Tony Iommi virtually taught me how to play guitar. I learned "Paranoid" way before I ever learned "Stairway to Heaven" and "Smoke On the Water".

Well I think some of this may have already been said, but here's my two penn'orth..............
I think we need to ignore the fact that various Purple and Sabbath incarnations well outlived the Zeppelin break-up. Those 80s/90s efforts are just glorified lookbacks to better times. So in essence we are looking at the three bands in their late 60s and 70s heyday, agreed?
In that context, I don't think Sabbath are in the same league as the other two bands. Ozzy could never sing and most of their stuff was too mind-numbingly heavy. (Great model though for some of the 80s music-lite hair-rock which followed, I agree.)
I was more of a fan of Purple when I was a teenager in the 70s and I still love In Rock and Machine Head - truly great albums. I got Machine Head the week it came out and didn't listen to anything else for probably a fortnight. Ritchie Blackmore: well I never understood why anyone would prefer another guitarist.
But which of the three bands has stood the test of time? Be honest. It's Zeppelin by a mile, it's not even a contest, although some of Purple's stuff still stands up to scrutiny as well. From Zep 1 thru Physical Graffiti, few artists have strung together a series of albums so full of classics. (All right, yes, I agree, Beatles, Bowie 70s period, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder 70s period........... you can probably name a few more but if you want to consider 6 great albums on the trot, Zeppelin are right up there.)
Anyway, cheers.

I voted for Zeppelin by the way...wow, what a shocker!!!
Also, when you say which band you preferspecify why... I pick Zeppelin cause I find them to be the most balanced of the three, with the most awesome guitarist of thouse three (hope Ghost Ruder does not read this...) and the best singer and drummer...hehehehe Also I find their albums to be much better, specially the first 6...and Sabbath bores me to death to be completly honest hehehe

Yes, I did this thread before http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=46417&KW=Zeppelin I'll always love Zeppelin and Purple I saw Purple once in February 14, and it was one of the top 10 concerts of my life, I was in front of Roger Glover. And I love the sound of every instrument in Deep purple, but I choose Zeppelin for other unexplainable loving reasons

All these bands are amazing and have affected rock music greatly, but I have to go with Zeppelin on this.

As I read the question, I got in here just to write the same. Uriah Heep, of course.
I don´t know why UH has ben moved away from this discuss. The 4 basic hard rock bands from the 70´s are those...

I disagree. At least with Sabbath.

Because Zep and DP were already releasing big albums in the '60s?

Ozzy wasn't exactly an amazing singer, but he was very good at conveying emotion. Then again, in some songs he sounds almost as good as Plant to me in a technical sense (Wicked World). And what about "Changes," "Planet Caravan," "Sleepin Village," etc..? Not incredibly heavy.

Erm? I'm not sure if it's just me, but I think Zeppelin and Deep Purple have way more in common with '80s Glam than Sabbath.
