Procosmian Fannyfiddlers are great and quite dark despite them being almost a form of folk music.
Thule from the 1990's in Norway were pretty amazing.

More ambience and less guitar perhaps ? I quite like it personally. Hogarth did a very good album with Richard Barbieri of Porcupine Tree a few years ago called The Hand Not The Weapon which might fit this thread.

No, I haven't, actually. Would you recommend any album in particular to start from, or should I start from the debut?

If you want the heavier/funkier Anekdoten, start with their debut or Nucleus. If you want something that plays more with dynamics, space, and generally more restrained start with From Within and work backwards.

What do you guys think of Guilt Machine? I completely forgot about them, but I think they'd fit this thread. I would recommend them, they only have one album, "On This Perfect Day". They do a nice job of mixing spacey/ambient sections with a heavier prog metal sound, bordering on alt rock sometimes.

Yea - they have strong KC influences earlier on. The mellotron they use throughout their career is beautifully utilized. Their live albums practically turn it into a lead instrument.

I've listened to "Vemod" on spotify and that's the impression I got from it. I think I'll be listening to it quite a lot in the next few days, seems great. |

I'm surprised I didn't mention My Dying Bride before, Turn Loose the Swans is amazing and oh so dark, the violin work in particular is beautiful.

I don't remember ever using any dark pokemon. I thought they looked badass, but were actually pretty useless compared to the rest (this comes from a casual, third gen player)

Try 'Rabbit' by The Tea Club. It has an overall dark mood throughout.
Also check out Comus, Mr. Bungle, middle-era Anathema, Battlestations, and Il Tempio Delle Clessidre to name a few others Edited by pianoman - November 23 2014 at 19:30 |

Check out Chapters by Anekdoten. Here is a sample (from one of their earlier albums Vermod). Dark but also beautiful music. Here is one from Edison's Children (Marillion) Perhaps the most underrated prog concept albums - Sylvan Posthumous Silence. Dark and the lyrics are particularly pointed with despair and suicide themes. Recommended to listen to the whole album Soup - from Norway. Do look to Scandinavian bands for good examples of dark prog, probably due to long winter nights.... Enjoy! Let me know what you think. |
