"Porcupine Tree sound like they are trying to be prog"
Porcupine Tree are not trying, they do sound very naturally.

PT easily.

Cause Steve Wilson is the greatest music composer for the last 20 years. He does use the similar riffs but he  varies the timing. His vocal melodies are brilliant. Chords structures used are different and quite stunning.

P.T. by a lanslide. I feel Tool is a bit overrated but i'd be lying if I said that their commercial appeal and mainstream loving fans didn't sway my opinion. Tool is really good but P.T. is my favorite band and the band that made me love progressive rock.

PT is so overrated I actually lose interest in listening to them, despite enjoying them a lot, just due to how annoying their fans are.

Aside from that fact though, still Tool by a landslide.

At first I thought I'd already posted here....damn similar avatars.....Tongue

Anyway, I totally love Porcupine Tree, and I am frankly shocked that they trail in this poll. Shocked.

A year a go I would have said Tool, but now I prefer PT by a land slide. It's odd how things change, as Tool used be my absolute favorite band. I honestly haven't listened to them in a while and the last time I did I was a bit disappointed... they just don't have the same impact.

PT are very good definitely, but Tool it is for me. One of the most unique bands today.

But the thing with Tool is that it's been forever since they made an album anybody cares about, and since there is more than one dominant musical force in the band, there isn't the disgusting hero worship like with Steve Wilson. For example,

This post makes me feel physically ill.

Although, on the flip side, I can understand some of the fanboyism of PT, Tool has no redeeming features whatsoever, but perhaps that is getting too deep into things. So while Tool fans are probably worse outside of this website, here PT is worse here since nobody will ever stop talking about them.

This is true. Fanboys have pretty much ruined PT for me.

Umm, because other artists don't "vary the timing"?
His vocal melodies suit the music, but they aren't "Brilliant" by any stretch of the imagination. It's nothing that hasn't been done before and probably even better by probably a whole bunch of pop artists. I'd say Prince had cooler vocal melodies.
There is nothing different about his chord structures, that's just ridiculous. Fair enough you think it's stunning that's quite subjective and I had no qualms with that, but he hasn't reinvented the wheel with chord voicings.
A lot of the stuff he is using chord use was used in the classical lexicon hundreds of years ago and even then he doesn't use as many chord voicings and doesn't vary it up as much as they did.
There really is just a lot of root 5 and 1 3 5 chord voicings in his music, nothing extraordinary.
Jeff Buckley, Joe Satriani and practically every jazz fusion guitarist that's worth his salt are a few examples that have regularly used much more complex chord voicings

Wow - Thats pretty goddamn unimpressive. You care so much about other people liking an artist, you claim it makes you dislike the artist....

EDIT:

I'm quite aware of the difference between fanboyism and simply liking something, but honestly, you let it stop you from enjoying something brilliant?

Yeah it would be "goddamn unimpressive" if it were purely stemming from the internet, but unfortunately I get PT shoved in my face in real life.
Seriously, every party I went to in recent times, there was always this one PT fanboy kid that had to put PT on " GUIZE PUT PUT ON PT" even when no one else is in the mood for it and I'm never in the mood for them at a party.
Eventually you'll just end up associating a band with negative things like (having it shoved in your face at a party), so it really does ruin bands for me.

Okay, that sounds alot worse than what I was expecting

I don't know anyone IRL who actually likes PT, so I guess that makes it a little different.

I couldn't even bring myself to vote. Both bands were my favorites earlier in life, and both have worn off a little bit as time goes by, but I still love both of them, so I can't choose.

Not a very hard choice... Tool wins. Both bands are some of my favorite modern bands, but about both I can say some negative things. About PT, I think, I can say more negative things than Tool... I don't really like SW's vocals, PT hasn't made anything "outstanding" except for FOABP, and most albums fail to really reach me. Tool is a bit repetative sometimes I think, but apart from that they are fantastic, and not only musically, as their album artwork and video's are brilliant too! Both are very talented and innovative bands, but Tool easily wins.

Porcupine Tree for sure, tool has more of a metal sound which I don't really like that musch. I'd rather have the spacier Porcupine TRee anyday.
