Yes, big five were Yes, ELP, Genesis, King Crimson and Pink Floyd, but sometimes that gets expanded on, and I have heard the term bix six various times over the years, and the number six spot usually goes to Jethro Tull. I'm fine with that concept of a big six. By the way, I think I voted for Magma in this poll, though VdGG and Soft Machine tempted me. I like Rush, but it personally comes far down this list for me as much as I did like the band when I was a teenager (though I guess I would have voted for Focus back then) |

In this list I miss Family, I think a group that for historical importance and quality of the albums is exceeded only by a few (and in this list by very few).
It's strange for me that Family are so little considered. But I think I know the reasons.

My Big 6 are:
Tull Le Orme Giant Camel Magma Graaf and Caravan Oblivion Genesis Rush or Eloy Fill the top 10. May have missed a band or two. While Yes, Crimson, Floyd don't even make my 10.

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Could not care less about three of the Big Six. Of the options listed here Magma is my fave, though I also have much love for VDGG, Soft Machine, Caravan, Banco and GG.

Yes, the Big 5 as I always read it back in the 80s were Yes, Genesis, ELP. Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull with King Crimson sometimes instead of JT i.e. the five largest, best known and biggest selling bands. But I think the term Big 5 was a mistake from the beginning and it should always have been Big 6, because leaving any of that 6 off the list is ridiculous.

For me a toss up between Camel and VDGG. I don't think I'll vote though.

Are there(or were they)really a true prog band though? For me they were one of those bands who sort of start off leaning in a direction that would become prog(ie proto prog)but maybe never quite got there(like the Moody Blues imo). I like their first two albums but haven't heard any others. Going by what I have read and know about them though.

I wasn't aware of Rush weren't in the big six. Big four or five I can understand but who would be there instead of them? Tull? Floyd?
Anyway, wound up voting for Rush despite my previous comment since I didn't see them on the list at first. When I used to rank my favorite bands(I try not to have favorites anymore)I would usually put them at number two just behind Yes. Edited by AFlowerKingCrimson - January 14 2019 at 17:43 |

Yes, I know, the proggy attitude of Family is uncertain. But I think they are progressive, in a art-rock way, similar to Strawbs (going to folk) or to Roxy Music (going to pop). The the characteristic of Family is that they have changed the players and the sound with a speed over time of 6 years, without ever stopping into a predefined style, without ever trying to conform themselves to the progressive but evolving with full freedom. I've written the reviews of the 7 album recorded by Family, here in PA. In one of these, I wrote: The Family is a great art rock and pioneeristic prog rock band. I think the Family is one of the most underrated group here in progarchives and generally in forums of prog fans. The reasons why Family is underrated are: 1) Family's music is full of american roots-rock influences. 2) The singer is too much cumbersome. 3) The music of the group is guitar-oriented and keyboards are not preminent. 4) Family prefers more short art rock songs than suites or long and odd songs. In a word: Family's music is visceral art rock, not cerebral or classical prog rock. Family's music touch more your lung (and heart) than your brain. Anyway, this music touches you in a surprising way, full of strength and intelligence. I think that, after the psychedelia of Music In A Doll's House, Family published another masterpiece (more eclectic progressive, more art-rock): Fearless. Even Bandstand is very good. |

I enjoy a lot of these bands, and listen to them frequently, but I do dearly love the Moodys for their early excursions....plus they were the first headlining band I ever saw, with Spirit opening. Great show. And yes, Family!

Focus, then Renaissance, Camel, and Caravan for pure prog, then Moody Blues for 'crossover'.

The system told me I have already voted, but it appears that I haven't posted in this thread. Without a doubt, I voted for Van der Graaf Generator, not only above the other bands in the list, but above all other groups (including the Big Six).
