It usually works great for me through lyrics, but rarely musically.

Oh, Alex, I ordered Comus's second yesterday.

Can't say I'm overly impressed by First Utterance. It's raw, emotionally challenging and unique in its own way...but where is the depth?

I absolutely love that album; I think there's plenty of depth.

Not quite sure if it's to your taste though.

Perhaps. But I'd like to know why it isn't to my taste.

Because it's brilliant.

Actually, maybe you don't like the subject matter and/or John Milton?  Perhaps it's the vocal style.

It is full of depth.  It Drip Drip's full of depth actually.

Plus there is no other album like it.  Not even Jan Dukes De Grey.

I just think they're trying too hard without never really getting anywhere which resembles "brilliant". A little like VdGG Wink. But yes, as usual it boils down to taste. I'm sorry Alex, didn't mean to be confrontational. I just interpreted your answer as if they had something specific I just couldn't get into, which spurred my interest. It's quite the contrary actually, since I feel they lack something that would make get into it. A typical 3 star album Smile

Oh, no, I didn't take it as confrontational. It's fine.

You have heard Comus' second, Alex?

It features a certain member of Henry Cow.

So no, not everything members of HC do is fantastic.

I haven't heard the 2nd... because I've been afraid to. LOL

I plan on listening to both albums this weekend though.

How can it bother you when you just said the complete opposite? LOL

You said they try too hard.

Yet I'm pretty sure they didn't try much at all.  I think many of them were drunk or stoned. LOL

I think I read it somewhere.

I'm fairly sure they all moved into a house together though to record it.

Hey, if I was drunk or stoned, I'd probably think about writing a song about rape or murder or something else really graphic and gruesome.Wink

That's interesting.

Reminds me of Trout Mask Replica.

I knew that would come out wrong...
That's why I edited. I meant to say something smarter LOL

The music feels forced somehow, with a lot of energy put in during its making, and yet it didn't live up to the expectations I had. It becomes faux-interesting. Or something like that...

I'll have to dig out the album... I'm sure the liner-notes say something about the recording of it.

I'm off too.
