That is one smoking album you've got going there SteveClap

I know some people who are a bit put off by the vocals, but I personally love em to death. S'got a nasal quality to them that I really dig. The music is out of this world too. Italian masterpiece if you ask me.

Me? I'm going Swedish today

Yeah, it's a doozy all right. I hadn't played it in a while.  Very unpredictable.

Let me join the praise regarding Cervello, it is an Italian masterpiece in my book too.

And Dave how is that GBS album? I only have their follow up (no way I can recall the name) and honestly although I think it's good I grew a little tired of it pretty quickly...

That's great, yeah it's one of those earlier works where they still get very weird at times, those are generally a bit more interesting than all the simpler albums that followed I think.
Have you heard Absolutely Freak Out? That would be my definite favorite.

I have been sitting on their first two albums for a while without actually listening to them, but have recently fallen completely for the debut. You should definitely go for it SagiWink The new one is also very good - at least the bits and pieces I've heard of it. Island is one of their best tunes imo:

Winter is black metal season. So it is, so it has always been, so it will always be.

^I've been looking for some Black Metal on the less misanthropic side. Dark and melancholic acceptable and sometimes preferred, I just want something a bit more human than Slayer. I see Imperial Zeppelin listening to a bit of black metal sometimes as well, so his input is invited (all input welcome).

I accept that if I started a BM band, it would be one that BM fans hate. But I'll be jiminied if I don't adore the bejeebers out of some of that loud fast hooligan music. *knits sweater at lightening speed*

Maybe check out early Enslaved starting with Vikingligr Veldi, or Burzum's mid-era of Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem. The latter band I don't get the inclination to listen to very often, I have to get in an extremely specific mood to like it.

Blut Aus Nord's more "normal" albums like Ultima Thulée and the Memoria Vetusta trilogy might also be worth a listen if you want epic atmospheric stuff with some very ambitious and complex arrangements.

Thanks. I have enjoyed Blut Aus Nord's later material (Memoria Vetusta iii and the 777 trilogy), and haven't explored any earlier stuff so I expect I should like the rest of their stuff. I've also heard some of Burzum's first album, but haven't heard any of his other stuff. I've not heard Enslaved. I will check those out, thank you again. Big smile

One of the BAN members also has a one-man sideproject called The Eye making more music in the vein of Ultima Thulee, its name is probably a reference to Woden. Winterfylleth are a recent British band taking most of their cues from the Memoria Vetusta trilogy, though they aren't anywhere as good. (their name's an Old English name for the month of October)
