Ok so then do you suspend accounts or make it so they can't log in if you feel people are just being overly abusive or trolling? We all have bad days but I'm referring to those who just have nothing better to do than just harass people for the sake of their own egos or something and never seem to contribute anything productive at all to the site.

People make replies personal as a matter of course, it is impossible not to, if you are part of a dialogue with an opposing view then an interpersonal exchange is inevitable. If someone posts a comment that I disagree with then my reply is directed at that person in particular and not at all the people in the world who share that view, in disagreeing with the argument I am naturally disagreeing with the man, yet while I'm attacking the argument I am not attacking the man, but it can be misconstrued. The problem there is a forum post lacks all the non-verbal information that a face-to-face conversation would carry - you cannot tell whether I'm typing this post in anger or while convulsed in fits of giggles or in a state of ambivalent bliss - so the subtitles and nuances of language can be misinterpreted, an attack on the argument can be misread as an attack on the man and often is. For example if you think that something someone said was an idiotic thing to say you have to be very careful in how you express that thought - smart people say stupid things, that does not make them stupid, but if you point out their comment was stupid it can make them feel stupid. Of course stupid people also say stupid things and in my experience those people are quickest to take offense.

One of the many roles I serve here is responding to reports of personal attack between forum-members: to evaluate the gravity of what at first glance seems mild or innocuous I will trawl back through the exchange of posts to see how the conversation escalated and to ascertain what prompted the alleged attack and subsequent report. More often than not is it due to some minor misunderstanding or some perceived slight made in an otherwise innocent comment.

It takes a lot for us to suspend an account. First off they have to break some rule or other, since we only have 5 rules and 2 of them are relating to personal attacks (2 & 4)  then that is not too difficult:

Quote 1. No Vulgarity profanity, or bigotry

2. No Personal attacks (flaming or trolling)

3. No Pornography or offensive images

4. No Sniping

5. No Illegal activities

Normally such an offense would result in a polite request from an Admin to refrain. So secondly they have to ignore any such warnings before we would consider a time-limited suspension. While there is not fixed rule on how many such suspensions would ultimately lead to a life-ban, rest assured if a member is suspended more than once the chances of a life-ban increase considerably.

I dislike banning people and I dislike handing out suspensions, I would much prefer the whole concept was unnecessary, I don't "get" why people behave so badly while hiding behind the anonymity of the computer keyboard, are their lives so sh*tty that the only pleasure they gain is in making others feel bad? One prick stalked me on Facebook and called me a c**t because I suspended his account for a month - as not to disappoint him or prove him wrong, I forgot to un-ban them after the month was over.

I also gain no pleasure in having to reprimand grown men for behaving like children, it is the most disagreeable Admin task I have to perform.

But you don't have to, Dean. Is it the army? Are we at war, in the middle of the battlefield? Every day I see women behaving like little girls and men like teenagers, I think that's the way most of us are, profoundly immature. What fascinated me is when I see teenagers here behaving like middle aged men, now that is disturbing.

Well a good tip for you would be take a rest from PA, come back in a week or so. If this cyberspace still irks you, plead the 5th and leave the site and bookmark another page. It really is that simple.

If everybody had the same taste, prog shouldn't exist. Why don't you feel free and use your different opinion to create something new? Maybe you will find a lot of fans, like many other prog masters Wink
Come on, trolls are everywhere to play their childish games. If you want to leave because of someone typing crap behind keyboards, YOU will be the child.

It's a real nightmare not only when  you don't feel comfortable in some place, but the worst is that you can get out!

It looks like accounts can't be deleted. This place is just horrible. Even some of the moderators are unprofessional and let certain members get away with bullying other members. It is simply deplorable.

Exactly. That's where I am now. I posted something then a moderator arbitrarily decided to delete my thread only after he got the last word in. It's almost to the point where I wouldn't mind paying someone just to delete my profile. What is the point of having a website like this where you take sides with those who are abusive to others and can't just respect the members. I am at the end of my rope here.

^Hey! Don't take it like that. I just defended your cheese-polls. You can be quite aggressive and difficult to communicate with yourself you know (as can I).

@ Prog_traveller - don't let disagreements/bullying get to you, life's too short to worry about a bunch of words on a screen (except for a good review, that's priceless....)

The problem I have with you is that you take your frustrations about another member and decide to make a thread about it. Everyone reading PA inside the last two days know perfectly well who you're talking about.
Like I said in my mail to you: you've never once approached any member of the admin team about your concerns, which is the way these things are handled. You post in the open forum. When that then is about a "bullying situation" you yourself instigated, and, perhaps far more worrying, about a respected longstanding member, I close the thread. Then again, I would've done the same had any other member been involved.

Stating the obvious but you don't have to log in. Get someone to change your password and not tell you what it is.
