Oh, and if I was to pick an album that is in my top 100 that isn't even on the top 500 here it would be...
KLAATU - "Hope"

I have to agree with Firepuck. The list is not perfect but it's a good place to start with. To those who are upset about DVD and so just choose "studio albums only" and then it will make more sense.
However, it's another fine way to be exposed to music one does'nt know so I'll pay my share :
Can - Tago mago, Magna - Udu wudu and mainly Robert Wyatt - Rock bottom are choices I support with all my heart. others :
King crimson - starless & bible black,Islands, Discipline, Thrak and The power to believe.
VDGG - The least we can do is wave to each other and World record.
Peter Hamil - The silent corner & the empty stage and Over
Jethro Tull - Heavy horses
Robert Wyatt - Old rottenhat
Kate Bush - The dreaming
Matching mole - Little red record
Talk talk - Spirit of eden and Laghing stock
Moody blues - In search of the lost chord and Question of balance
Amon dull II - Phalus dei
Focus - Moving waves
Sylvian & Fripp - Dammage
U.K. - s/t
Deep purple - s/t (IMO it's milions time better than In rock)
Trafic - John Barlycorn must die
Strawbs - From the witchwood
Pink floyd - Atom heart mother
Vangelis - Heaven & hell
Aphrodite's child - 666
Proto-kaw - Early recordings from Kansas
ELP - Works vol I
also Renaissance's Scheherezade tend to get in and out the list and must be there IMO.

My view is that the term 'Masterpiece' is used altogether too loosely to describe albums which although they may be very, very good are not and never will be masterpieces. But I guess it's a matter of definition and semantics.
For what it's worth,I feel the same about 5star reviews and ratings which can be very misleading. I find myself applying an 'acrooss the board' discount to many reviews and ratings otherwise I'd be totally broke running out and buying all these essential works of art and then deciding to use them as drinks coasters. Anyway, to get into the spirit of things, one you should definitely run out and buy from a band not in the top 100 is AIR CUT by Curved Air. It's just so good - call it what you will! |

I agree 100%. "Air Cut" is a great album, and Eddie Jobson's performance on it is nothing short of spectacular - considering that he was only 17 at the time. |

I seem to remember a post where someone created a top 100 list with only the top listed album from each group allowed on the list - or maybe I was just thinking of doing it... (more caffeine please).
Here is what the current top 100 would compress to. It would be interesting to see what the other 60 bands and their albums would be.
Perhaps this would be a list that is less about "fan-boy-ism" and more representative of the music we love. A list like this may allow up and coming bands or 'new discoveries' to move into the radar of members and visitors more quickly, creating even more interest in progressive rock (just a thought).
14. TOOL - Lateralus
34. IQ - Dark Matter
39. PARSONS PROJECT, ALAN - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Edgar Allan Poe 40. KRAFTWERK - The Man-Machine (Die Mensch-Maschine)

Firepuck is going in the right direction: you can't complain with the results of a mathemetical formula. 2+2=4 and it always will, even if we really believe it should be 5. If you don't like the results, then change the formula/algorithm.
I'm not sure if simply retaining the top album by a given artist will do the trick, as bands such as King Crimson certainly have more than one of the top 100 albums in prog history. Maybe that single-album system could work if you changed the categorization to list the "top-100 artists of prog" instead of focusing on the albums.
Other than that, it's probably just a question of exposure. If you really feel that most people are not "getting it," then continue the process of proselization until enough people are converted to your pet albums and those albums end up on the top-100. Personally, I think people come to various albums in their own times and in their own ways. That process of discovery is what makes the journey and search all worthwhile. Regardless, time will continue to refine the list. Of course, there's nothing stopping anyone from putting up their own site or writing their own book about what they think shuould be considered the top-100 prog albums. In the meantime, the question has to be asked: "why is it important to change this list in the first place? Why should it be less 'predictable' or 'conservative?'" In order to be more entertaining? more 'accurate'? more welcoming of diversity? to validate our own personal tastes?

The captain is correct in that it is the journey of discovery which expands our collections. Without this website (and the top 100 list) I would never have renewed my interest in prog nor gotten into; Anglagard, Porcupine Tree, Focus, IQ, and Le Orme to name a few.
These discoveries have whet my progressive whistle and now I search further into the database to try the more obscure groups. It is an inevitable journey that I, and I'm sure many other members, face and look forward to.

I'm still trying to figure out why The Visitor is the highest rated Arena album. I'm just plain confused.
