I think that the Live version (Gates of Delirium) on (YesShows) is far superior to the version on Relayer! It is a very good track but I haven't included live performances in my list!

Garden of Dreams
I am the sun (full)
Tales from Topographic Oceans
Awaken
Firth of Fifth
Suppers Ready
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
All of the Above
Stardust we Are
Subterranea
Well, minus Subterranea, I would put these in my list as well.  Maybe add a couple (Love Is The Only Answer, Gates Of Delirium, Devil's Playground).

You don't like "Sleepless Incidental" from Subterranea?? The double CD has astonishing moments and overall I like the consistency - the best effort by a modern band alongside the Flokis of course!

The Seventh House and The Wake are the 2 best IQ albums imho.

I agree totally with Rob about the Yesshows version of Gates, their second best track after the unparalleled genius of Awaken, which remains my favourite piece of music of all time.

Aye Seventh House is a good shout, though I prefer Ever (marginally).
IQ have a solid output - but they have two CD's (without Nicholls) that are badly produced (Nom Zamo, and Are you sitting comfortably) - these two have some good material on them but have far more late eighties pop influence than the rest of their output! Fortunately, Nicholls returned - with Ever - which is a brilliant CD!

I agree with all this.  I'm just not a fan of Subterrania.  I realize it may be heresy for IQ fans, but it's my least favorite IQ album of them all (I've never heard the two with the different singer, so I'm not including those).

Subterranea seems to be IQ's Topographic Oceans! I think that as far as the "Isn't it about time we go for the long concept album" moment for IQ, it went pretty well! I think that it is consistently good and has some brilliant parts as well...The two CD's with Menel aren't the greatest (bad production leaves it a bit flat!) but even those have some outstanding tracks , Nom Zamo has - Human Nature & Common Ground - the latter having some exceedingly good anti-war lyrics (I also like the lyrics for human nature as well). Are You Sitting Comfortably is fairly awful except for - Nostalgia/Falling apart at the seams (good lyrics again) and Wurensh.
I also forgot to mention - DARK MATTER - I love that CD! - I know Roj doesn't like the Harvest of Souls (suppers ready tribute) - but again - it has good anti-war (and somewhat anti-American) lyrics!

Well, I LOVE Topographic Oceans, and Subterraea isn't in the same league at all.  However, it's not a terrible album and had a few good moments.  Still my least favorite.

I love Dark Matter, one of my top 5 by IQ.  They seem to do a Supper's Ready tribute on each and every album, but Harvest Of Souls is easily the best one.

All right, having listened to the new Transatlantic a few times, I have to say it reminds me of Fly From Here in the sense that it sounds like Prog for elderly gentlemen who can't stand too many surprises in their music.  Geriatric prog was how I described Fly From Here, and the new TA more or less fits that label for me.  It's far too smooth and uniform.  No bite, no surprises......even the tricksy instrumental passages seem incredibly tame even when compared to The Whirlwind, let alone the first two albums or the early works by their respective bands.

I still need to get more familiar with it (except for Shine.......I don't ever need to hear that horrid song again), but on the whole it seems very safe and non-threatening.  Something I would expect from Katy Perry or One Direction, not from a prog rock "super group" (of course, the music is far better than either of those two, but the general feeling it gives me is quite similar.........I guess what I'm going for here is that it's like "prog for the masses").

Maybe I've just grown too cynical, but I'm just not FEELING anything at all from this album.  It's all so slick and smooth and safe, I just don't get it.  I had hoped the epics would impress me, and the title track isn't bad, but even those just seem so bland.  Even Black As The Sky ,which I liked a lot at first, has lost it's charm rather quickly.

I've never been a huge TA fan to begin with, but I did get a lot of enjoyment out of their previous work.  This one just seems like it's going to go in the "don't listen to anymore at all" pile very soon.

Funny thing though, I actually like the second ballad more than Shine.  Though both are pretty weak and listless compared to something like We All Need Some Light.

All that said, I'm really enjoying Desolation Rose now, both CD's.  So it's not that I'm burned out on all things Stolt (maybe Morse though) like I was afraid I might be.  So there's that, anyway.

"Prog by numbers" is possibly the phrase you are looking for! Mind you, if they had a long intro with the wheezing of a dying man with extremely bad COPD interspersed with the sound of a straggly beard being combed with the claw of a spider crab and also intermittent croaks from a Cane toad with the added relish of it crunching on a nice juicy beetle it has been fed...would you have been impressed??

Is anybody familiar with this?:

Time Requiem "The Inner Circle of Reality" (2004)
Second Time Requiem record. New drummer (Zoltan Csörsz) and bass player (Jonas Reingold). Very tight and well performed. Recorded and mixed at Reingold Studios Sweden. Did a cover of ABBA as Japanese bonus track. Released by Regain Records (Europe) and Marquee Avalon (Japan).

I think anybody would be impressed by what you describe being recorded.  However, I don't think I'd enjoy listening to it much.

I'm listening again now, and I think I've been a bit harsh maybe.  Still my least favorite TA for now.

Familiar, as in, I knew about it at the time of release, but I never heard it.  I believe it's a prog metal album of some sort, so I never bothered with it.

Haven't you got any prog metal - I thought you liked DT?
I am thinking of having an Opeth session shortly....
