I simply can't stand this anymore. Again, I love Meshuggah, Opeth, and others, but this is simply not working for me. I'll try it another day I suppose.
That hardly ever happens where I have to stop an album like that.
|
I can't even get into them. Oh well.
|
I couldn't get into Meshuggah for about 3 years if I must be honest. The first time I heard them, it was horrible. But obviously as you can see now, I'm really big on extreme metal, and 3 years later, I really began liking Meshuggah. So it may come to you later down the track, but don't force on yourself.
|
Agreed. I could certainly recognize the skill, though, Haake is freaking ridiculous.
|
Haake is an absolute monster, he makes Mike Portnoy look like a beginner. Although, to be honest, I think Portnoy's skill is often rated too high for what it is anyway
|
I feel you have to be a drummer to understand some aspects of Portnoy's fame.
Sure, he's not my favorite and he isn't the greatest, but some of his techniques ARE really amazing. I absolutely love his earlier work with DT especially.
|
As I've told you before, the main problem with Portnoy is that he's gotten lazy over the last couple years. Petrucci on the other hand has at least progressed his technique, whereas Portnoy's stayed relatively the same on the last few albums.
|
Portnoy has gotten lazy, I agree, but his drumming on Images and Words, Train of Thought, and so many albums and songs is really impressive. I never thought that though until I started getting into more advanced sh*t with my drumming, and then I realized that he is pretty good. Not the best and not my favorite, but nonetheless I think he's better than many are inclined to think around here. Maybe it's the drumming knowledge, I don't know.

Could someone describe Batboom's sound to me?
I like Opeth. I don't like Power Metal. I don't like the growls of screamo bands like Funeral for a Friend. Most metal does little for me. Most metal doesn't sound heavy to my ears.
Pat may agree with me but I feel Guapo's Black Oni is heavier than many so-called metal bands.
|
Umm James, screamo bands don't use growls though dude, it's called screams. Opeth is 'less metal' than BtBaM. BtBaM is more death metal, it also falls into the Tech Death category (and James, you have this pre conceived notion tech bands are about guitar solos, Tech Metal refers to all parts of the music being tech, and BtBaM's techncality comes from the drum work and rhythm guitars, they had a lot less guitar solos than Dream Theater, and even some Opeth songs have more soloing than BtBaM). You're not really into extreme metal though, so your mileage may vary, but BtBaM released the best album in metal in 2007 for me personally.
|
I realise that but it's not just their screams but the music that goes with screamo.
So are they closer to the growls of Agalloch then? I quite like those.
And no, I do not have that preconception that technical means guitar solos. Not at all. Agalloch are technical in a way and they're not guitar-solo orientated. Neither are Meshuggah.
Besides, I don't mind guitar solos if they're used in moderation and are generally more bluesy or jazzy; rather than w**ky.
|
No, Agalloch is black metal screaming. GROWLS JAMES, I'M TALKING ABOUT GROWLS KID! Agalloch isn't technical at all, in any shape or form. I used to know Agalloch songs on guitar, they don't take that long to term, the genius of Agalloch is the atmosphere and song writing, not the technical skill. The album, Colors by "Batboom" has solos to fit the mood of the moment. There are jazz solos, one fairly bluesy/rock solo in there, but when the more tense and aggressive moments kick in, the more technical solos are in, but they fit the mood, and it would have been wrong to play a bluesy or jazzy solo in those tense parts.

Yeah Pat, I can remember first hearing Ghost Reveries for the first time. It smashed my face in 2 pieces. It was that good.

He's still a good drummer, no doubt, but laziness killed him. Petrucci is just stupidly good technique wise now, but if I must be honest, he usually isn't in my top 10 favorite soloists. Most days I actually rank Akerfeldt more, I dunno, I just really love Akerfeldt's soloing, never over the top, but still great technique and he always chooses the right notes. And well, as much as you guys might be shocked to hear this from me, but I think Petrucci's soloing has gotten a bit too noodly in recent years.

I'm a little surprised at the bands in the Top 25 progmetal albums thread, a lot of Symphony X and PoS and Ayreon, but hardly any XTech

I prefer Grolsch over most beers. Particularly over rubbish English and Australian lagers.
I drink bottles of Fosters when I'm out but I prefer Budweiser (it's more expensive though).
Proper Czech Bud (Budvar Budojovice) is fantastic though.

Ehh, according to Last FM, I barely listen to DT anymore. I've been rocking too much other metal bands lately.
