I like Isis, could not get into Neurosis as much, but I may have heard the weaker Neurosis stuff.

Sorry, though, I don't think there's any noisy guitar I could mention that you haven't already heard. Well, you might like Nadja. No, that's not just youtube sound quality, they really are that buzzy.

Have you tried Music Transonica?

They a Japanese band and feature Tatsuya Yoshida on drums.

But it's noisy... very noisy.  All the guitars are distorted and it's hard for even my ears!

Bands like Meshuggah, or Opeth (while not as heavy, but to give James an example of a band he knows) go for a clean production job because the type of music they play needs that in order to breathe and to let you hear all the distinct notes in the guitars, which is important for that style of music.
If you want sludge, you go for doom/sludge metal, and at least on PA, that sound can be found in Experimental/Post Metal anyway and clarity of sound is less of a concern for some of those bands.

See I find Guapo's Black Oni heavier than many metal bands yet they're not metal at all.

I like my slow doom metal sometimes, in fact, I prefer my metal slower rather than faster.  I'm weird like that.

And Harry will hate me but I love the solo in Pearl Jam's Alive.

I listen to metal of all speeds, from ultra slow doom/post, to high speed death.  I like a lot of mid tempo stuff as well.

I still think Guapo's Black Oni is heavier than most metal bands though.  It's all in the keyboards, rather than a low bass sound.

Meh, dude, I actually like the album Ten, even if I'm not a particularly big fan of the band.

Try knocking first. Wink

Harry, I mentioned you to my Porcupine Tree fanboy mate earlier re: Wilson's lack of guitar solo quality

He didn't take it well. LOL

I think I may give their recent album a go... if I can find a copy.  I haven't heard Blackest Eyes but apparently it's good.

One problem: Deadwing has only a few tracks I like and I'm not fond of Wilson's voice... will I like their latest more?

Most Pearl Jam tunes are incredibly boring.  Even more boring than a Tool tune.

Alive is one of those receptions.

Except I generally hate repeated choruses... they make me cringe.  However I still like Alive.

I thought their latest was better than the last two albums, but his voice hasn't changed, I mean, it's still Steven Wilson singing after allLOL

I really do like the band, and really like Steven Wilson's rhythm guitar playing, but christ, his guitar solos on Fear Of A Blank Planet.................urghhhhhh.
And Alex Lifeson's guest guitar solo, is a let down as well, not horrible.........but certainly nothing I thought was speiclal.
Wilson should have just realized his limitations on his lead guitar ability, left the guitar solos out or called in Mikael Akerfeldt (who can ACTUALLY play lead guitar) to guest for solos.

Eh, I liked the whole of Ten really, but couldn't get into anything else the band did, but I'd take any of their albums over AC/DC 'CLASSIC RAWK" anyday.

Oh definitely!  AC/DC are not my thing at all.

"Back in black, blah blah blah nutsack wah wah wah crap is back blah blah blah"

I prefer Cinderella.

No, because if he did, that would have meant the album would have had a good guitar solo on itLOL
His abilities as a soloist are not rated highly enough IMO, but everyone champions Alex Lifeson, and even Lifeson's best guitar solos are not 1/6th as good as anything Akerfeldt has played.

Ah you're right.

However, Fripp is on it.

Special guests

Out of Lifeson and Fripp, Fripp's contributions were way better. The soundscape kicks ass IMO.

But yeah, if you really don't like Wilsons voice, you wont enjoy Fear Of A Blank Planet I suspect, because it still has a fair amount of vocal parts in it, although Anesthetize has a lot of instrumental sections in it.

I don't hate his voice... it's just there's something about it that sometimes annoys me.

Halo and Shallow are examples of that.

Arriving Somewhere But Not Here though, his vocals are fine.
