But in the end, I think it's a good idea and will be the best for the site.  RIO is as important and influential as Canterbury and Zeuhl, which are represented with their own genres.
I'm curious what you consider to be RIO rather than Avant influenced other than chamber prog. Not that I doubt you, but I have no idea myself.

Oh, I'll have to go through the list, but a band like U Totem, for example, is clearly RIO influenced.

Anything that has heavy influence from Henry Cow or SMM (ignoring, as you said, all the chamber prog groups, of which there are a good many).
Oh yeah, I forgot about the U Totem/5uus circuit.

What would Henry Cow and SMM influenced be? I could see something like Hoyry Kone and if we're stretching it Alamaailman Vasarat for SMM, but other than the side projects of members, I always saw Henry Cow as more or less standing alone, but I'm sure I'm wrong.

I'll let you experts try to figure out The Residents, SGM, and Estradasphere. ;-)

Henry Cow influenced:

NEO Museum
La 1919
Cartoon
PFS
Pocket Orchestra

Actually I wouldn't put the likes of Alamaailman Vasarat or Die Knodel in RIO.  They're more gyspy-folk/klezmer based and I don't consider them RIO-orientated.  Having interview Jarno Sarkula of Alamaailman Vasarat it has become clear the band members are more influenced by metal than any RIO or avant-prog band and they don't even consider themselves prog.

He can actually diss RK's Scheherazade, I don't like it very much.

Eh, first I've heard of this.

My thoughts: frankly, RIO/Avant is a pretty small and not exactly wildly well-known category. Just thinking in particular of RIO, is it really worth doing that for so few bands? Do we need another subcategory, just because we can, and even more bickering about which category a borderline band should fall into?

I thought this way initially, but:  what is the real argument against another subgenre?

Lots of work. Little return. More arguing.

Also, tbh, I think RIO/Avant is more eyecatching as a united front than a divided one. I mean, RIO... three letters! I'd just about ignore it if it wasn't followed by a slash. I can appreciate that the people who know it better than I do think a separation might be needed, but in my view that's a bit like dividing eclectic further just to make sure that VDGG/other extreme eclectic bands aren't in the same category as Gentle Giant/other ultra-complex/justplainweird eclectic bands.

Err... no.

I know you're joking, but you kept saying stuff like that when we were talking about it before and referring to laplace's thread. But that's not what laplace's thread was about, and I'm confused about what would give you that impression.

Wow James I haven't heard any of those bands.

Oh wow Rico, Heartscore are terrible.

I've only heard one of those bands.  Embarrassed

In my defense, I want to hear all of them - just haven't gotten around to it yet.  Also, Pocket Orchestra is next to impossible to find.

James is really going to get on my case about La 1919 because he's been recommending them to me for a long time.  Tongue

Thank God I only had to check if he fits in Art Rock (a while ago) - by listening to samples. A purchase of such kind of music would have resulted in suicide.
