Well, hearing the you tube "videos" posted in this thread really made me want to get this album soon.

Definitely sounds better thanks to the less emphasis on the metal part of things.

But I am fair at least Caio, the new Opeth is sounding pretty sweet.
I can't blame ya there Mike VV is more expensive for sure. Now they have all the sh*t you can't find at Best Buy or FYE but for DT and even Opeth, those are cheaper places to go for sure.

I think I gave you a number, just hit me up Bropeth.

I was kinda hoping the departure of MP would spark something, it's different for sure and their best album in a while but it's still underwhelming for me. Maybe some more time is needed.

Well, Mangini wasn't involved in the writing process. I don't know about you, but everything Ive heard from the new album sounds different from the last 4 albums. I'm sure we'll see a more drastic change for the next album when Mangini is more involved in the writing.

I do have your number. I'll hit you up next time I'm going Smile

I listened the whole album only once
But, to my pleasure, there is more keyboards and more Rudess influence (DT would benefit from using his classical composing skills more often )

This is probably my favorite track, and the most progressive, with great musicanship and melody, and without annoying Metallica-style vocals :-)

Great album, they finnaly changed their sound, as they were always doing until Systematic Chaos.
Much more emotional album than last two, with once again great lyrics!
:)
prog forever!

Don't see how anyone can say Mangini is playing it safe. He's way better than MP in my opinion. He's much, much faster, his fills are better, and he just all around sounds better.

I completely agree with you, DT does not put out really artistic lyrics, their strenghs are the musical parts. Awake and Images & Words both have some 2deep4u parts, though (Awake, specially).

The lyrics weren't fantastic but seem a little better than the last few albums.

This album smokes. I'm sorry but if there's one modern DT album the casual fan should get, it's totally this one. Every song is good and flows like a great album should. There's still heavy moments, but they make sense with the music, and there's a lot of major key stuff going on. They also move through some pretty interesting moments on this disc. I would say the music is very dense, so there's a lot to take in.

This is their most melodic album in 10 years. It's so prog too, which is great; I've listened to this 5 times I think, and I'm still discovering a lot of new things on the album.

***WARNING! CONTROVERSIAL OPINION*** This album blows Scenes From A Memory out of the water! Big time.

Sounds good Mike.

Without doubt, this is different and IMO better than their last 3 albums.
My opinion is still the same: There are good songs and really boring ones and right now sitting at 3 stars. Will give it time to grow on me but yeah, that's what I got. Better album then we've seen in a while but same DT problems: inconsistent and I really just do not like James' vocals.

Speaking of which "Bridges in the Sky" pisses me off LOL That's because I really like the concept of the intro, the drone singing (and overall intro) is cool as hell but it's executed poorly. Sounds like he's having a very prolonged belch. Bugs me because I like the idea a lot and that would've been ballin if done well.

IDK, from what I hear in YT, I didn't liked it that much. I still preffer Black Clouds and I still think it was one of the best albums they have put out, despite what some think. . . . . *cough* BRIAN *cough* LOL

I have only listened to Backs/Angels as it was released weeks ago on Zune, I have played it many times and it has grown on me....but from rating of 1 to now a weak 3, its just OK. The album will be available tomorrow and I will listen to the rest then, I'm in no rush......I will have plenty of time to be familiar with the content by the time I see them on the 27th Sept.
I agree with CCVP.....I think BC&SL is one of their best albums.....and I REALLY have a hard time thinking that this one can be better (in anyway) than Scenes/Memory.

What I do like are the songs I have heard them play on YT during their recent tour in Europe......I am more interested in the playlist for this tour than actually hearing the new album.

I think it's great. They sound fresh, rejuvenated. The compositions are for the most part, more on the prog, and less emphasis on metal. I think it's their strongest material since SDOIT.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

I love it!!  It's powerful, orchestral, dramatic.  I wish they hadn't put a ballad as the last track, but that's a very minor criticism.  It's a wonderful album and it grabbed me on first listen, where most DT albums have taken a little "digesting", if you know what I mean Big smile !!!

I loved it on first listen, but It definitely requires multiple listens to wrap your head around the music. That hasn't happened since SDoIT, or at least since the title track from Octavarium.

I like how Beneath the Surface is the last track. They've been ending the last 5 albums in a row with the grand epic; BtS feels like the epilogue to a fantastic album after Breaking All Illusions.

Just downloaded the whole album off Zune........have already heard Backs/Angels.......So far very good, the keys are nice to hear, the symphonic prog I hear I like a lot. Lost Not Forgotten is very nice!! Mangini sounds very good, as should be expected.....but you can tell he did not have much to do with the album, this is a Rudess/Petrucci project.

Its good....
But........nothing like Scenes/Memory, at least not on first listen and I doubt on many more. I would put it on par with SDoIT.

We'll see after many playes though........again I am more interested in their live show coming up.
