I only like Marillion, and possibly Fish's solo works.
Life seemed to him merely like a gallery of how to be.

Quoted from the first page on progarchives:

Neo Progressive:

The Neo-Progressive subgenre of progressive rock grew out of a movement in the early 1980s by a number of U.K.-based bands that focused on music that was deeper than new wave, both instrumentally and lyrically. The premier band of the genre was Marillion, who went from lengthy club tours to the top of the charts within a few years and dropped from popular favor almost as fast. Neo-Prog bands are generally influenced by early Genesis, Camel, and to a lesser extent, Van der Graf Generator and Pink Floyd. The music holds a much more lush sound than general rock, but lacks the sophistication of truly symphonic progressive bands like Yes or amel. Instrumentally, the bands tend to be characterized by a "noodling" approach that focuses on dynamic solos, and at its best, neo-prog lyrics are deep, insightful, and acerbic. Whether neo-prog is diluted progressive or adventurous pop depends on the point of view of the listener — most progressive rock listeners are likely to find the genre dull and unchallenging, while fans of AOR will find the mix more interesting than most rock bands. Although all of the major bands are still producing albums, the classic era of neo-prog effectively ended when vocalist Fish left Marillion in 1987.

Hope this help.

That makes sense to me ... And explains why Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings are not neo-prog. IMO neo-prog is a thing of the 80s, and didn't manage to create enough momentum to make it to the 90s. Bands like Spock's Beard, Glass Hammer and The Flower Kings revived the 70s symphonic prog rock genre, and I'd prefer that over neo-prog ANY time.

But that doesn't mean that I'm right ... maybe at some time I will find what the excitement over IQ, Arena, Pendragon and Marillion is all about.

Can you give more some information about Paradise Lost?  The only Paradise Lost I'm aware of is the metal band, who are definitely not neo-prog.

OK, I can accept that.  But it doesn't explain why you posted this in a thread about neo-prog bands.

Actually Ozric Tentacles are neo-prog, they are just purely instrumental. They do lean towards neo-psychedelia mostly though.

That's stupifyingly comical.

Ozric Tentacles are argueable (I think they're Space Rock like Floyd), but DT, Ayreon and Tool are Progressive Metal. And even the more mellow parts are Symphonic Prog Rock, not neo-prog.

Like all other subgenres and prog in general, there's no absolute definition of what neo-prog is. I don't think OT are like Floyd at all, they are entirely different both in sound and style. Perhaps you just meant that they both could be categorized under space rock.

One thing is for sure: Ayreon, Dream Theater and Tool are definitely not in the same category as traditional neo-prog bands like Marillion, IQ and Pendragon.

Ehh, for the most part neo-prog is kinda dull to me. I do like Fish era Marillion and some Arena I guess. IQ, Pendragon, Iluvator, and Jadis I tried to like, and don't really dislike, but just didn't get all hot and bothered over. Just all kinda sound like the same ideas, just reheated and reserved.

Look guys i grown up with groups like eloy, rush, camel, gong, floyd, king crimson etc! All these new bands (you want to call them neo-prog) i dont care what label you put them on sound boring to me,they are bad copies of the older groups! Now they all sound the same to me except some very few like OZRIC TENTACLES, TOOL AND PORCUPINE TREE and they are new prog for me, i dont care if they play progmetal or space rock! I respect your opinion and you should respect mine!
After all the name of the thread is NEO-BANDS AND NOT NEO-PROG!!!
