Understandable. Iguess different things for different people, so its all good Smile

I just see it as the opposite, but hey, thats my frame of reference

^Yeah I know. To me, almost all their songs have a unique identity. Each song has different dynamic usages, different time signatures, different vocal usages, and the members of Tool seem to give each song an identity. When I look at Lateralus, first there's the hard hitting yet intricate "The Grudge", followed by the short ambient drone of "Eon Blue Apocalypse", followed by "The Patient", which is soft and solemn, and after that you get "Mantra", a haunting soundscape, and after that the rhythmically complex yet mesmerizing and beautiful "Schism", followed by "Parabol/Parabola" which is a calming and quiet track which suddenly explodes into an energetic rocker. That's just a few songs that each give me a different connotation.

When I listen to FoaBP, the songs retain mostly the same mood and atmosphere the whole time, and with the exception of "Anesthetize", there's not not much change, even from song to song.

Both in my top 5, but I'm gonna have to go with porcupine tree. Tool's had 3 amazing albums vs porcupine tree's 5 + some awesome EPs.

i think that the fact PT were influenced by Tool in their last 3 LPs says a lot...

TOOL RULE!!!
-music is like pornography...

sometimes amateurs turn us on, even more...

-sometimes you are the pigeon and sometimes you are the statue...

Tool are dull as ditchwater; nothing offends me, but nothing really does anything for me either. I've heard it all before, sometimes by themselves as they are rather repetitive, but often done rather better by others.

PT are pretty good - not in the top class but a perfectly decent listen.

Look they're both great bands. even though I'm new here I'm pretty damn sure Tool is not "too deep" for anyone here. That is in my opinion a terrible argument...Go listen to 10,000 days and tell me it's not trying to be Lateralus. It's true Steven Wilson does use the same riff alot, but tell me what is wrong with that? It's not "progressive" enough for you? The respect Toolget's is for the 2 GREAT albums they have put out. The difference between the 2 is that if you ask people to rank PT from best to worst  you will have answers ranging from 1 end of the spectrum to the other, whereas Tool barring a few exception will have Lateralus and Aenima stapled to the top. Also I'm pretty sure Tool's time on MTV really helped them get appreciated outside of "prog circles".

All this being said Tool may be my 2nd favourite band of all time but when I want to listen to an album I only choose between 2. Whereas PT I'll choose between 5 or 6 discouting one's which are not considered albums i.e. Staircase Infinities.

I cannot deny Tool's musicianship, creativity or popularity but to me this music is not the equivalent of  splitting the Atom as some may have you believe.

I own every album by both bands and probably will continue to purchase any new material. This is a hard choice. The 2 bands have arguably the 2 best current drummers in the world. I love Colin Edwins jazzy  fingerstyle bass licks as much as Justins complex pick use.I love both Maynard and Stevens vocals as well as there respective side projects. Imo the thing that will sway me to vote PT is I prefer Steven Wilsons guitar playing over Adam Jones. His more melodic and acoustic use is superior to Adams more distorted grunge licks. Add in Barbieri's keys and there is the icing.

Tool because Porcupine tree hasnt quite made anything up to par with Lateralus. I really like both bands though, but Tool is just something else!

I guess I can see your point. The reason for my choice is also for the Guitar playing, I believe. I prefer Adam Jones' guitar playing over Steve Wilson's because while great Acoustic and Gilmour-esque Electric Guitar is great, it's been done before. Jones does things with his instrument that I haven't heard anywhere else before.

But I agree about the drummers. I would be blessed if either one of those guys played even one note for me.

Yeh but see which album it comes from. The hugely underated Undertow! I think of all Tools albums that one has the most melodic playing of all by Adam. SW does the grunge stuff equally as good as his Gilmore style riffing. IMO
I love both bands just that when I first joined here, Tool were it for me.

So Tool fans are voting because Tool is more original and Porcupine Tree tends to sound the same after a while...
