I've just got a Renaissance album (Scheherazade And Other Stories) and I
can't get into it at all
I don't see the appeal of early Camel but I really liked their 1981 album
Nude.
I've only heard two Frank Zappa albums: Hot Rats which did nothing for
me, and We're Only In It For The Money which came across like an
unfunny joke.

guess there's only two to be named: one band I used to love: Pink Floyd and one I'd never get into: Dream Theatre and the whole progressive metal thing

i have most of the albums in the PROG ARCHIVES top 100 review list, though the following bands have never or will ever appeal to me:
CAMEL or any "canterbury" drippy hippy scene bands. music for elevators and supermarkets.![Ouch](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif)
SOFT MACHINE never really understood what was going on here at all! a-b-c-d... etc. ??? ![Confused](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif)
VDGG "theme one" is a masterpiece to me, but not the albums. sorry guys, i tried REALLY HARD to like these!![Cry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)
MEATLOAF just sounds like a mess, a caricature (non-prog/metal people like this guy for some reason!)![Angry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif)
MASTERMIND i listened to all these albums and they just sound amateurish![Embarrassed](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)
GENTLE GIANT can't bear to listen to this group for a minute![Dead](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)
FRANK ZAPPA "hot rats" is brilliant but the rest of these albums sound like somebody left the tape running and they're messing about!! brilliant musicianship nonetheless.![Smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif)
so there you go - one man's meat is another man's poison! though i still believe there is no such thing as bad music, as there's always someone that will like it !![Wink](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

And the winner is......RUSH!!!! ....tried, but I gave up trying to enjoy listening to that bloody witch screaming like a 2 years old girl. ![](smileys/smiley17.gif)
Magma, but I recognise haven't done an important effort to get into their music, or maybe their music is too much for me!!![](smileys/smiley19.gif)
Dream Theatre, not a terrible band, but a highly overated one. There are many prog metal bands out there, like Threshold, who are far better than them , but I can still enjoy bits of their music.

Camel aren't Canterbury (I question why you didn't include Soft Machine
under your "Canterbury" umbrella) and Canterbury doesn't sound like
music for supermarkets. I think you're referring to John Tesh or Kenny
G, maybe even Yanni and the Eagles, but surely no Canterbury artists. I
wish my supermarket would play Soft Machine or Gong!
I just wonder how many Canterbury albums and artists you've actually heard ![](smileys/smiley5.gif) .
Surely, some musicians like Karl Jenkins, have done new age I guess you
could consider elevator music, but his solo career isn't Prog, if
anything Canterbury-related, only because he was involved in Soft
Machine (and Nucles before that).

I don't dig fusion and basically all improvisation-based music, no matter how shiny and technically gifted the people involved in are.
And I don't like the mere show of technical ability as well (the main defendant here is Mr. Keith Emerson...so sweet when restrained into canonic boundaries - take the solos in From the beginning for instance, or the wonderful rendition of Canario - but so annoying and boring when he goes wild with Hammond-riding or produces nauseating caterwauls with that wicked "Electric clavinet")
Talking about bands, I am somehow cold towards Soft Machine, Colosseum, Mahavishnu and the like.
I find Magma interesting but I can't stand Can...
I love bands like Angra, Dream Theater, Threshold, Ayreon, but I really can't get into Shadow Gallery...they simply have NO appeal on me at all. I cannot remember one single song of all their works!
That said, I very much appreciated Mike Baker's rendition of "Father" in Ayreon's Day 16: Loser

Some disappointing records
Soft Machinine: Two (their first is much better)
Amon Düül 2: Yeti (Tanz der Lemminge is much better, and Wolf City is positively great)
ELP: Works vol. 1
Roger Waters: Radio KAOS, The Wall Live in Berlin
Pink Floyd: Delicate Sound of Thunder
Jethro Tull: A Passion Play, Warchild, Too Old to Rock'n Roll Too Young to Die
Yes: Tormato, Drama
Genesis: Abacab (Duke isn't much to write home about either, though I like "Genesis")
Rush: 2112 (Awful! Cheesy metal with annoying, over the top, vocals. The title epic does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Echoes, Supper's Ready, Close to the Edge, Thick as a Brick, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Shine On You Crazy Diamond or Tarkus.

The Great Nothing is quite an adequate title for that Spock's Beard epic. It's not bad but it does very little to me.
Bands with lots of growling are not my cup of tea.

I agree!
Ditto for The healing colors of sound
The only good suites by Spock's Beard are The Water and most of all A flash before my eyes

Aw man...I just love Styx. Sure, if I heard them for the first time NOW, I'd think they were lame, but I heard them for the first time when I was in elementary school and they were with me thoughout high school, and I still have a soft spot for them. They're probably my second-favorite group.
These aren't least favorites, but here are some major, major, major disappointments: Rush's Counterparts, Yes's Big Generator, Kansas's Power.
Least favorite bands? James LaBrie solo is definitely up there.

I LOVE Counterparts![](smileys/smiley7.gif)
even though it wasnt their most prog album
Nobodys Hero is a fantastic lyric

Ain Soph ![](smileys/smiley11.gif)
These Japanese jazz-fusionists are the undisputed kings of boredom. 95% of their discography is a total yawn-inducing mess (particularly the later albums). But a lot of jazz fusion is really dull anyway.
Dark Side of the Moon never did anything for me either - I disliked it even when I was an unassuming classic rock fan .
Oh, and Power Metal

Ah, prog bands I DON'T like?
Well, let's see...
1. Post-Gabriel Genesis(everything was great, but after "The Lamb",
things
went downhill)
2. ELP after Brain Salad Surgery-Just one song on Love Beach almost
made me lose my cookies, and I had to listen to Close To The Edge in
order to get my bearings back.
3. Most raga-rock I have a hard time listening to, some Krautrock really
drives me nuts(although I like Faust and Kraftwerk), and most jazz fusion
puts me to sleep.
4. Apologies to those who like it, but I really don't like neo-progressive
rock. It's just whiny and dull, in my opinion.
5. Don't like Gentle Giant too much either. I feel like I'm not getting the
experience I usually get out of symphonic prog.
6. post-Waters, pre-Division Bell Pink Floyd. In other words: A Momentary
Lapse of Reason. Dull and boring.
7. Prog metal is a mixed bag for me. I kinda like Tool.

I couldn´t tolerate Yes (the vocals mainly), but they are growing on me lately and I actually am getting into them more.
For those who can´t get into Dream Theater, a good idea is to start with Falling into Infinity. That is probably theior most proggish release.(And the least liked by fans of Dream Theater)![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
For those who have problems with Spock´s Beard, I suggest Octane.
As for me I just can´t get into ELP. Hoedown sounds like a bloody electric barn-dance.
