I think Canario is excellent and it's a shame it was never played live.

Of course Brain Salad Surgery, which probably the best, or at least the most balanced studio album of them. However I also think that Love Beach isn't as bad as many consider. For instance, Works II is worse.

Given that it's a spill tray, a table scraps, a leftover meal if you will of ELP tunes I really don't think we could expect anything less out of this album. Although...even a meal of leftovers might have a nice bite or two to it.

Love Beach has some decent if cheesy pop songs, but that is not what we are interested in as proggers, is it? Memoirs shows some serious attempt at composition but it ultimately falls flat on its face. Very ungentlemanly. I suspect its votes were done in irony or a means to balance out the poll. BSS is the one in all seriousness.

That reminds me: Has any band (prog or otherwise) covered "Taste of My Love"? Oh, you look so hungry, woman Could it be for a taste of my love Down on your knees Well, I do feel lonely, woman Help yourself to a taste of my love Call up room service Yeah, taste it, taste it, taste it |

Inspired by this poll, for the first time I gave two songs from Love Beach a try, namely Canario and Memoirs... Canario is listenable but I'm not particularly keen on it. Memoirs is rather good if somewhat too long for the substance. Given that people say the others are far worse, I'm not really motivated to listen to the rest, although at least listening to these two wasn't exactly an ordeal.

That ELP would present such lyrics isn't surprising for band that named an album Brain Salad Surgery, which refers to oral sex on a man (note the suggestive Giger album cover). I don't find the lyrics to "Taste My Love" witty or erotic, but very distasteful -- crude and problematic (doubt many feminists would appreciate them). This points to a general feeling I have about ELP generally and is a reason why I don't much like the band (I quite like the debut), and it is that I find the band vulgar.

Shouldn't this poll be JFF? It is just for fun, isn't it?

"Brain Salad Surgery" by far for me. I even rate BSS ahead of "Close To The Edge" and "Selling England By The Pound". I expect I'm in a minority though.

You nailed exactly why I think it's such a silly song: it's not witty at all. Those lyrics are nothing short of overt. As in "how many ways can I describe a sex act, without or without metaphor." Not sure why Lake and Sinfield stooped to that level. At least the title of BSS was cryptic for the time.
