I included Shocking Blue anyway, simply because I like them, and they're Dutch. Smile

European symphonic metal is not prog.
We were still talking about European prog, weren't we?
I'm pretty sure Nightwish are in Prog Archives. Smile

But according to you, any album after the '70s should be categorized as "neo prog", and PA doesn't do so.

I think the inclusion of Nightwish in ProgArchives is infelicitous.

PA is the only site that classify Nightwish as progressive metal, I disagree but I let it slide why they are here, for the Tarja era was quite unique, they created a subgenre, along with Therion (which was definitely an influence on Nightwish).

I was going to say what a load of bollocks, but although it has been cheap and easy to acquire CDs from European bands and artists up until this point in time, Brexit may well make them very hard to get hold of in England.

I am almost certain that I have more albums from European artists in my CD collection than British, and surprisingly often the European CDs have been cheaper (even including p&p) than the British.

Where are you buying your CDs from?

You'd be hard-pressed to find any European 1970's prog at any of our record stores in Nottingham. Confused

BTW, I always found the second CD of Ayreon's The Human Equation boring. Perhaps I should give it one more chance in my 40s (that begin in a couple of months).

Yeah, you can get tons of European prog on Amazon UK. At one point virtually every RPI album that is rated highly on PA (including all those one and dones) were £4.99 new, with free shipping over £20, and I know because I bought loads. Ok, that was a few years ago, but there are still plenty of good deals on Amazon UK, and that’s without looking on their Marketplace which often has some great deals.

To be fair, I only really use Amazon for older albums, because I prefer to buy from Bandcamp for more contemporary releases even though it sometimes costs a little more than using Amazon. But between Amazon and Bandcamp, you’d be hard pressed not to find what you’re looking for at decent prices.

Then there are great sites like Will’s Caerllysi Music which always has a bunch of great albums in their £4.95 deal. Even after p&p a lot of the albums in this section are an absolute steal.

I’m guessing maybe Paul prefers bricks and mortar, by his answer, so HMV is actually a surprisingly good bet. Unfortunately my local one closed. I used to buy a lot from there, because despite its reputation, it’s prices were almost always identical to Amazon’s, and it’s selection way better than you might expect. Plenty of both classic and contemporary European prog releases, and for good prices.

It’s there if you want to look for it. But I suspect it’s more that Paul is not really looking for it, more than it not being there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

^ I don't buy CD's online. I buy them the old-fashioned way, over the counter at a record store. Smile

Unfortunately, my local FOPP record store in Nottingham closed down recently as a result of the lockdowns. Ouch

I always did where I could. But the independent record store in my closest town closed. I then frequented the independent record store in the next closest town, but it closed. A Fopp opened there. It closed. An HMV opened there. It closed. I have no local record stores, so I buy solely online now, but I still try to support independent labels, and/or buy from the bands and artists directly - through Bandcamp, BigCartel, or their own website.

While buying from a bricks and mortar store will always be the preference, I think it’s still worth checking out what’s available online. But if you don’t want to do that, I’m sure you could ask your local store to get something in for you. I’d be surprised if they’re not willing to do so. You’ll end up paying more, because you’re effectively creating a middleman, but if that’s the way you want to do it, then go for it. Once upon a time that was the only way to do it....,

^ Ordering CD's over the counter at a record store is exactly what I did with my five Golden Years of Dutch Pop Music 2-CD compilations by Earth & Fire, Group 1850, Kayak, Shocking Blue & Solution. They were £18 each to order but well-worth the money. Thumbs Up
I've managed to buy all of my Symphonic Metal albums straight off the shelf though, as they're pretty easy to get hold of.

Dark Matter is a brilliant album and beats Marbles.
