A lovely, total chill day around here. Thinking about, remembering so bittersweet, those who are no longer with us. Life is sweet and it is sad, at the very same moment. Hold them close to you every moment you can. 1940s Hit Songs
Kate Bush - Director's Cut Song of the Season (old Christmas songs comp) Carpenters - Gold Kate Bush - Lionheart |

Yay for Nick...Enjoy the euphoria!
Recently: Haley Heynderickx - I Need to Start a Garden: I'm finding myself drawn to female indie folkers once again, and this one has that last name. Madder Mortem - Marrow: Prog meets doom meets groove meets gothic metal. Pretty accessible, and yet they sound so odd. Really good. Sinistro - Sangue Cassia: Probably my album of the year. Beautiful, soft and emotional female French vocals over some of the darkest monstrous doom riffs ever. Sea Moss/The Social Stomach - Ugh: Quite a split! Sea Moss sounds like Yoko Ono fronting some wild krautrock grooves, and The Social Stomach is like Lydia Lunch fronting a mathrock band. Very cool. Trillium - Tectonic: I think the singer here also guests on some prog metal albums. This was kind of boring symphonic metal from what I remember. Deicide - Overtures of Blasphemy: New release by one of the old-school death metal classic bands. Outside of their debut I was never much of a fan, and this did nothing to change that. Cheer Accident - Fades: Yeah...about this gang. Some great grooves, with vocals ranging from 'cool' to 'so uncool'. Overall it was nice I guess. Tribulation - Down Below: The songs are more in line with hard prog rock than metal despite the golblin growl vocals. Interesting, and it works. Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath: Power metal with tales of yore about the warrior queen and the forging of steel through might and thunder and...yeah, couldn't finish this. Maybe if I got back into D&D. It's been a heavy week I guess.

^ Dave...just tried to play Sinistro and found I wasn't, in this moment, in the right headspace for it. However, while I had that up, it brought up related bands and one called Trees of Eternity, which I am very much enjoying right now. Soft doomy metal with clean female vox, almost relaxing. And I hear you about the D and D...this album too conjures memories of the Drow elves and misty forests. ^^ Jim, thanks man...have a great day tomorrow!

^Glad I was able to inadvertently steer you to Trees of Eternity...I've heard of them never never listened to them until now (and still playing as I write). Fantastic stuff, thanks for that! Looking them up, it's quite a collaboration of proficient musicians, members who play or played for Katatonia, Swallow the Sun, October Tide, Wintersun, even Nightwish...jeez. Of course I also found out about the singer, who died of cancer before the album was released, which adds some serious emotional weight to this. Not exactly holly jolly Christmas music...
I want to check out Snail Mail soon, since this new crop of female rock & folk artists has been piquing my interests as of late. But yesterday it was all about "man" stuff Bob Seger - Night Moves Bob Seger - Live Bullet Bob Seger - Stranger in Town I don't play his stuff too often, and rarely veer off from those three albums (aka the ones I own), but a quick binge does me right once in a blue moon. Not popular 'round these parts I'm guessin', but the man's got one of the best weathered wizened barroom vocals.

Oddly, Dave, I found the album strangely uplifting despite this young singer's horrible fate. Or at least comforting. Apparently she knew she was dying as it was being recorded, and the lyrics are about this journey. Everything about her performance seems so very hopeful, strong, and unflinching. Far from bringing me down, it felt courageous and something I was fortunate to hear. And it's just excellent music too. Melodic and atmospheric, puts you in a trancey feel after a while. I'm going to buy this CD, and I don't buy many anymore for finance reasons. You know metal WAY better than I. Is there any place for Trees on PA? PS. I like Seger too on occasion, Night Moves my favorite "type" of his songs...the pretty ones. But like you I don't actually play it much.

Thanks Nicholas. I do like melodic doom metal but moreso without the monster vox. Nothing against it, I just prefer clean vox. Santa brought me an awesome new mechanical gaming keyboard, so I'm having fun typing with brown switches. My previous were blue and pretty loud. These are a bit quieter. Enjoy your boy's first Christmas!

There might be a place in the experimental/post metal department. Honestly think it could go either way with the voters, but it's certainly worthy of being screened. I personally would give it a yes vote. Neat to see how music affects us in different ways. I found ToE quite a melancholy but gorgeous experience. Sinistro gave me a different vibe. The persistently slow yet monstrously down-tuned and heavy tone gave me this impression of sheer monolithic power that ironically energized me. The Gathering's Mandylion is classic doom mixed with a bit of Dead Can Dance at times. Don't remember any growling on that one, but I really like their followup Nightime Birds which is less heavy and more atmospheric. Draconian is growl-city, but man does Arcane Rain Fell pack a bleak punch. Confession: I remember in my early teens getting the D&D A4 module, and inside their was a drawing of a female drow elf that my confused hormones fell madly in love with. Dark, warrior-like and beautiful...yep.

I just adore those old Gygax era modules, esp the 70s ones that had a less polished, less refined style of artwork. They had such a vibe to me as a teen compared to the stuff that came later when the company got big. Is this the photo you were referring to? ![]() |

Actually it was this one (this is actually the first time I've seen this in decades...wow I really was a young loony!). I'm thinking maybe her armored assets played a role in this. The illustration you posted makes the original one look quite old-school and awkward!
