Yes, he was a Dutchman for the greater part of his life.
His parents had a morganatic marriage.

He lived in Gelderland but was not born in Nederland?
Ah, so we're looking for royalty of some kind?
Edit: I mean, the son of a royal father and thus not a royal himself

He did not live in Gelderland. I explain the link about the hotels in Gelderland later.
And yes, we are looking for royalty of some kind. His father was not royal, but he came from a house of operetta princes.
He loved fast cars.

So his mother was royal and his father was a commoner?
A Germanic princely family I guess?

No, his father was a prince and his mother was a daughter of a baron and a baroness.
He was married for more than 60 years.

Oh right. That doesn't really help though...
But he was of a Germanic (so either German, Austrian/Austro-Hungarian) princely family?
Did he take the surname of his father?
Edit: sorry, I have to ask another question before I forget. Was he a friend of Ian Fleming?

Yes, he was a friend of Ian Fleming (that was one of the "invisible" clues).
Was he a business man?

Odd question: was he an influence on one of Ian Fleming's characters?

This is a hard one! But I hope I’ve got him at last:
Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld
If it’s correct, I found him through the white carnation and the hotels (Bilderberg). Was he born the day before his official birthday?

That does sound like the answer. I did searches for white carnation... how on earth did you find him via that?

^Actually I found Bilderberg first, googled bilderberg "ian fleming" and found a connection. Now try to google: bilderberg "white carnation" and see what pops up first.

Where did the Bilberberg clue come from? I only saw one about Gelderland.
I know why he's linked to Bilderberg, of course, having now read about him on Wikipedia.
I think the easiest way of finding him would have been via the character Count Lippe in Goldeneye.

Yes but what made you think "oooh, it must be that one in Bilderberg"?

Lucky guess. No, actually I had seen Bilderberg mentioned in connection with Fleming before.

Well done, refugee! It was indeed Prince Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld.
-o0o-
Here are the explanations to some hints:
Born the day before?: In the Dutch Wiki entry, it is stated that Bernhard was born on 28 June 1911 according to his birth certificate.
Transatlantic: His activities were quite international, on both sides of the Atlantic ocean.
Creature of his own myths: a description given to him by a Dutch journalist and biographer, Annejet van der Zijl.
4 + 2 = 6: He had four children with Queen Juliana and (at least) two other children born out of wedlock.
Cocktails on the roof: from the lyrics of the Genesis track It: "It is shaken not stirred, cocktails on the roof". Shaken not stirred would have been too much a giveaway.
Would-be viceroy of an independent nation: He planned to oust the government of the newly independent Indonesia.
In for a bribe: He had taken some bribes of which Lockheed is the best known.
Wings wild life: He loved flying and safari and he was the founding chairman of the World Wildlife Fund.
Thunderball: In this James Bond film there appeared a guy called Count Lippe. Moreover, some of James Bond's features were derived from prince Bernhard (womanizer, fast cars, Martini-wodka shaken not stirred).
White dianthus: The flower he always wore on his suit.
Two hotels in Gelderland: De Wereld in Wageningen where the Germans signed their capitulation at the end of WWII in Bernhards presence (Bernhard was the leader of the Dutch resistance), and Bilderberg in Arnhem, where the first Bilderberg conference was held.
He was married for more than 60 years: His marriage to Queen Juliana lasted for 67 years.

+ he was screened by Ian Fleming during WWII, so they knew each other personally.

A very controversial individual. I was intrigued to see he worked for IG Farben... hmm. I've read stuff about them before... not exactly a wonderful company. I'm fairly sure they were involved in chemical warfare and other things too.
