Bands That Can Do No Wrong

I would love to say Rush, but Vapor Trails and Test for Echo were probably my least favorite prog albums ever. I couldn't get into the "modern" rock sound at all. It's strange because I loved Snakes & Arrows.

Almost every band that sticks around long enough will eventually do something wrong.    With the exception of bands that break up while still on top like Led Zeppelin or the Beatles, or The Doors due to the early death of Jim Morrison, most bands will eventually reach a point where they either can't get any better or are afraid to try.    There is also the inevitable temptation to sell out for mass appeal and sacrifice the very essence of what made you a great band to begin with.     Of all the long term bands, King Crimson comes the closest to doing nothing wrong, because even there worst is better than most other bands best.

Haven't yet heard everything from the Beatles or the Doors, but they're pretty good candidates, I guess. But I don't understand why so many people think Led Zeppelin are infallible. Even leaving beside the stuff I don't like from their "best years", they were pretty inconsistent later on. It possibly already started on Houses of the Holy with "The Crunge" and especially "D'yer Mak'er", but it became pretty obvious on Physical Graffiti. Sure, on a double album spiced with old leftovers, you're bound to have some filler, but Presence was all original material and I find "Candy Store Rock" and "Hots on for Nowhere" to be pretty insubstantial. But if anyone argues that In Through the Out Door isn't a disappointment, I wonder what exactly he wants from Led Zeppelin. I very much think that Led Zeppelin disbanded way past their prime, but then again I'm pretty critical of much of the band's output anyway.

Regarding my own "can do no wrong" artist: There's no artist  to my knowledge that made only songs that I enjoy. But if we're talking on the scale of albums, probably the original Mothers of Invention and the Roxy-era Mothers. I think it's okay if I split the Mothers up into several bands, because they really are pretty different.

This thread is still alive, incredible! I don't remember what I have replied one year ago, but I haven't rated ANY Pink Floyd studio album less that 3 stars. All the other dynosaurs have at least one bad release.
