5%20stars This is a fantastic album. Everything in it with the exception of the middle of Moonchild is great. The lyrics are generally more deep and powerful than the normal stuff. Epitaph is the best song on the album. I bought this CD off the internet because I had listened to my Dad's copy of Beat and I was very pleasantly surprised by how eclectic and interesting this album was. My Dad is unaware of In the Court of the Crimson King and thinks that King Crimson was an 80's new wave band. I really need to let him listen to it.

Yeah... I think he should review them, though I do have to question his sanity for buying them in the first place.  I don't like Neo, I've tried six or so of the most famous Neo albums, and I haven't bought any more because I haven't been impressed.  If I ever manage to sit through any of them again (those that I haven't yet reviewed) I might review them... but I still wouldn't buy any more neo...

Yeah... I particularly disagree with two reviews of Certified(Mark?): Death's Sound of Perseverance and DT's Images and WordsAngry.... Of the first one, well, he bashes it and says is just a riff-collection with no coherence... But then we have to think, the guy has a point (Death IS a riff-collection, though with coherence).... DT, on the other hand, is, according to him, "not prog or original" and he keeps saying that Metallica's And Justice for All is true prog and the source of all DT's material.... Obviously he and I haven't heard the same record (the same recordS, for I also have heard AJFA and , though very good, it's NOT prog).... But even if I disagree with the guy, I think he writes with some skills and coherence, and even though his points of view are wrong from my perspective, he actually makes a case for each and every none of them, so I don't see any problem with his reviews staying... As for the "not liking a genre hence not reviewing it" angle, it wouldn't be fair if he (or anyone) ONLY wrote reviews about that hated genre and no positive review about anything... He does not like p-metal... I disagree with him, but if him being able to write about prog-metal gives me the right to write about things I don't like (cough!***we know what**cough!), then I'm OK with that. I try not to review post-rock albums, for example... (well, I don't have that many so it's not that difficultLOL)...

Oh no, didn't misunderstood.... I was making a general comment after you made yours... Yes, he should review it, and then stop buying it. I guess it would be fair economic advice, not to buy things you will hate, wouldn't it? LOL.... I will try, for example, a few more post-rock albums, and if I'm still not convinced, good-bye... I'm not rich, you know. That same money could be used in Norah Jones' albums!!Big%20smile  But I want to say it again: though I disagree with the ideas, the reviews are decently written and well-argued. So they are not bad. They are just wrong. Tongue (In my eyes of course).

BLACKFIELD — Blackfield II

5%20stars Well I'm not a Pop lover, in fact I think I'm an antipop, anyway here we go:

1. Once: A little rocker one (reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkings maybe?), with a really beautiful chorus.

2. 1000 People: This begins with keys and some acoustic guitar, then voice enter (very melancholic by the way). The chorus is very spacey with strings

3. Miss U: Kicks in with drums, guitar and bass, then Mr. Aviv Geffen starts singing while the mood becomes more calm (reminds a little the song Creep by Radiohead). The chorus is the same like the begining but enhanced by strings, the song ends with a nice guitar solo fading out...

4. Christenings: This is maybe the most PT song (in fact I read some time ago on the internet that this song was a leftover from Deadwing sessions!!!) this features slide guitar and is very spacey, typical Porcupine Tree.

5. This Killer: Begins with gloomy atmosphere only acoustic guitar and subtle drumming, the chorus again is very spacey enhanced by the help of keyboards. This is a dark song.

6. Epidemic: This one starts with piano and voice in a gloomy mood, then when the drums and guitar kicks in, the song gains strength and the mood changes (over the same piano riff, Brilliant!!!) The chorus again is spacey with layers of keyboards, there is a guitar lead accompanied by voice harmonies.

7. My Gift Of Silence: This begins with guitar effects (a la Pink Floyd), piano and voice giving the sensation of loneliness. This song has a very beautiful chorus.

8. Some Day: Start melancholic (again?) only with acoustic guitar arpeggio and Aviv Geffen singing like if hope doesn't exists. Later Steven Wilson gives him a helping hand with vocal harmonies. Then drums enters to give strength to the song with the help of strings until the fade out...

9. Where Is My Love: Begins with gloomy mood, the chorus is beautiful, heavy but melancholic. There is a repetitive guitar phrase adding emotion to the chorus. Magic!!!

10. End Of The World: Starts with dark dual voice and a catchy piano riff. The chorus is very popish accompanied by long open guitar chords. The song is full of keyboard textures.

Verdict: Is Pop? Is Rock? Is Alternative? Is Psychedelic? Maybe. But for sure is a compilation of intelligent and well composed music. Cut-your-veins (I'm kidding that's the way we call MELANCHOLIC music ;-)) This is a very beautiful and depressive album. The stars are aligned this time and seems to be that a legendary pair has formed (Geffen/Wilson). Time will tell...

Not my cup of tea but definitively a MASTERPIECE

Personally him calling all of the Prog-Metal genre not Prog is not only insulting but quite laughable, as in he's very misguided.

I'm certainly not going to sit here and tell you marillion isn't prog when I know damn well it is.

probably I'm fretting too much, but The Owl's opinion that Meola is 1 star is scaring; he already has three reviews where he is pretty determined on his low rate, whether we're talking the classic of Meola or the "nude" of his other sides...Unhappy

Hi. This isn't critical, but there's an unclosed bold tag at the end of Erik Neuteboom's review of Gentle Giant's "Playing the Fool". It's not a bad review or anything - far from it - but it makes all the subsequent reviews bold too. :D

1%20stars This is probably one of the most overrated works in the "Progressive-Rock" genre. It gets more irritating with every audition. Utterly uninspired almost in its entirety, thematically incoherent, with long, tedious and jarring instrumental sections full of repetitions, with high- school tunes posing as serene melodies and with synthesized, ambient effects desperately trying to mask the complete poverty which characterizes the musical composition. Even the infamous "cha"-nting in the "Sound Chaser" suggests an inclination for jesting rather than intensions for serious music-making.

The only exception is probably the appealing theme introduced on the synthesizer through an inspired modulation in the latter part of "To Be Over". However, that suggestion of lyricism is left utterly unexploited. Instead of developing that theme and its melancholic undertones the band simply prefers to use it as the basis for uninspired improvisations.

I unreservedly recommend this work to anyone who wishes to understand what mediocrity in "Progressive Rock" means.

I was going to give my comment about that same review in this thread, but then I read my own signature... and decided against it.
 
I disagree with it. (I gave RELAYER a 5) But man, it's decently written, it's not insulting (at least not evidently).... I guess he has a right to say he hates the album...even though he shouldn't hate it. Big%20smile

I believe that attrition (when it's fair and civil) may help us to learn more and in a positive way. Above "Relayer" review is a bit provocative but not insulting IMO, unless there's something hidden when evaluated by a first-language-English speaker. Perhaps Bob, the Easy Livin' may solve this puzzle. Wink
