I suppose anyone can have a favourite for any reason.

I find myself wondering why Ginger Baker doesn't seem to rate anymore since in the early 70s he was considered by many to be the best rock drummer in the world.

Jon Hiseman was often thought his nearest challenger and he doesn't seem to get a guernsey now either.

Hiseman is brilliant (I forgot to put him in my rapidly compiled list) especially on Colosseum's Valentyne Suite. I love Cream and Ginger Baker is undoubtedly very good but I never get much of a "wow"  factor when listening to his playing for some reason.

Neil Peart is peerless IMO

Mike Portnoy is a monster live. And Bill Bruford is technically brilliant

One drummer who I never really rated until I saw him live was Lee Kerslake, from Uriah Heep (now retired). As I say, nothing special on record, but was uber-impressed when I saw him play live with Heep.

^^ This, exactly, in regards to Ginger Baker. And Hiseman falls right outside my top 20.

Dave Weckl, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, and JoJo Mayer also fall right outside my top 20 but deserve some major attention. I actually expected to see JoJo make quite a few lists, but not a one!

Choppy footage, but the audio's there.

Besides the usual suspects (Portnoy, Peart, Gavin Harrison, Bruford), I also highly enjoy the drumming of HellHammer (Arcturus), Aesop Dekker (Agalloch), Piotr "Mitloff" Kozieradzki (Riverside), Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth), Danny Carey (Tool) and Scott Rockenfield (Queensryche).

Actually, it's hard to imagine a great progressive metal record without an amazing drumming performance.
