Right again Ian, comparing bands and grouping them accordingly is called musicology. This phrase "if x then y" is a catch phrase peculiar to this web site only. |

Personally, I think the first Dire Strait albums are progressive and hence; they should be included here. BUT, my stomach churns and I cringe when I get reminded about how cheesy and downright bland their image and music was at the end. That includes some of the Brother In Arms album and the whole of their last album. That for me makes an inclusion of Dire Straits here difficult to say at least. I do not think I am the only one with these sentiments. Btw I am not a member of any of the evaluation teams so this is out of my hands. |

^ "Brothers In Arms" is cheesy? IMHO one of the best albums of all time, both musically and lyrically.
Don't understand these debates though. Even cats and dogs know what Dire Straits are. Their inclusion (rejection) will make nothing for the band.

If band X then band Y must be a valid argument when it comes to genres and here is why. Genres are defined by certain characteristics, however those characteristics are based on the bands in the genre and the inclusion of new bands can expand that genre and create new elements that become a part of the genre.
Take Metal for example, in the beginning it was defined by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zepplin and was distinguished by its high pitched vocals and bluesy sound, this was the archytipe for Metal. However over time as new bands got added the definition of metal changed. With the advent of NWOBHM the inclusion of high speed and volume came to be more important and the inclusion of a blues influence lost some importance. When Thrash started it could have as easily become a subgenre of punk. However the fans and artists saw their music as being Metal. New features of Metal were added such as harsh vocals and palm muting. Now almost every overdriven band that has palm muting and every band that has harsh vocals is considered Metal even though they bear little to no resemblance to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple or Led Zepplin. The archytipe for metal no longer has high pitched operatic vocals or a bluesy sound. Things change.
Many of the newer and more active subgenres in PA are changing in sound and if we don't take this into account PA as a usefull database will be left behind because we will continue to use outdated definitions to detirmine additions.
We must be progressive, not reactionary to remain relevant.

Well side one is a bit weak, especially Walk Of Like and Latest Trick
but side 2 is one of the best thing from the 80's

.........Anyway......... Let's kick this hot potato over to the evaluation team so they can decide. That's the 7th time or something like that they have evaluated this band. |

Saw Dire Straits live in 1987
They were never prog nor prog related even back then. Private Investigations was as close as they got. The ALBUMS were not prog, maybe the live material was related but none of the albums.
I really loved the band at one stage
Perhaps Mark Knoffler could be considered - he did an album with Chet Atkins too.
I just think the band are really a good pop band with some good ideas, nothing prog.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
![]() Pick Withers was in Spring and Magna Carta of course, so he's already here. Hal Lindes is on several of Fish's albums. Terry Williams came from Man. Guy Fletcher has appeared with both Roxy Music and with Phil Manzanera as a solo act. Even Mark Knopfler appeared on a Steely Dan album (I apologize if someone already mentioned these).
And considering Knopfler had quite a talent for making blues guitar sound like high-brow art on the band's first few albums, it seems to me that Dire Straits fit the definition of 'Prog-related' quite well, especially since several members of that band both influenced and carried on the prog torch before and after their involvement with the band.
