Girl: So, what music do you like to listen to?
Me: Well, last saturday I saw Del Castillo at Skipper's Smokehouse and next Friday I'm going to see John Wesley trio at Gasoline Alley, ever been there?

I listen to music that pushes murder, drugs, free sex and suicide with the purpose of destroying country, home and education.

Sounds more like a pick up line to me. Bound to get you a flattered laughter from whichever girl you try it on, I'm sure.

You'd be surprised... A girl asked me that same question and I said: Oh, lots of stuff that you've probably never heard of... Try me... Uh oh! I also mentioned I liked some Japanese stuff, so I had to reel off a list of bands... she nodded and said she'd heard of some of them. I did once get a girl listening to some Porcupine Tree that'd I bought the same day I'd bumped into her (she was a friend of mine before anyhow) and well... she actually got to hear some of Deadwing before I did. Oh and she liked it. I may give her my copy... because Deadwing is just... erm, not my thing. Anyhow, to answer the question: Girl: so what sort of music do you like? Me: oh, a mix of stuff, mostly avant-garde and jazzy and a little bit of metal; but mostly stuff you've never heard of Girl: oh right *puzzled look on her face*; any bands I may have heard of? Me: Opeth Girl: Oh I like them! That usually works. Addendum: Or, like Pat and some others: Girl: so what music do you like? Me: Theusz Hamtaahk mmmmmm Theusz Hamtaahk mmmmmmmmmmmmm Theusz Hamtaahk! Girl: you're weird... Me: Da Zeuhl Wortz Mekanik! Girl: oh dear... Final edit: the premise of this thread is sexist... a girl who loves prog may be asked what music they like from a guy too. Or perhaps you're gay, of course. Edited by James - January 24 2009 at 10:45 |

I'm just not funny, so I didn't bother writing an actual response for this thread... and so far, I've only counted 3 regular female members, so I don't think "sexist" applies here.
As far as I can tell, this place actually could very well be an all gay male forum...

I usually start with band names that most everyone has heard of. Then I move on to slightly obscure metal and avant-garde bands to confuse people.
Oh, and mentioning Magma is a great way to usually change the topic. |

Nobody I know has heard of Magma though... not one.
Most people know one Pink Floyd song. Not that I am that into PF, mind you. I have very few bands that I would say people have heard of... except maybe Opeth and Muse. |

Nope. Melissa is most definitely a girl. So is Cleo (I forget her P.A. name) And many of the guys here are married (to a female) and have children (of their own). Many are also in long-term relationships (with females). There's a few gay men on here but I find that gay men usually like Abba or Disco music. |

This from the guy who was worried about being sexist?
Jeez, I have a lot of gay male friends and none of them like either.

I used to drink in a gay-orientated pub and they listened mostly to cheesy pop. I know a few gay men who like metal too, mind you. Plus one of the biggest VdGG fans on P.A. is gay. Edited by James - January 24 2009 at 12:02 |

I've come across a few that not only like it, but also play it (Rob Halford rings a bell?) As for the topic of this thread: "Anything you can't find at Free Record Shop, because they have no basement" |

Are you asking for some chewing gum or is this an 80 year old lady that has lost all of her teeth, thus leaving her with only gum and you are asking for a gumjob? |

My tastes seem to be that of an average white male with bipolar depression and a midlife crisis - which is partially true anyhow. I actually once said something to this effect, but the girl wasn't sure whether I was kidding or not. Then again, neither was I.
