Birds of Fire is a masterpiece, but Tull are amongst my favourite bands, and one of those I know best. I don't think they can really be compared, though.... They are two completely different musical worlds.

Until now I did not have to make too difficult choices, but finally it comes to a very sensitive question for me.
Jethro Tull or Mahavishnu Orchestra? I am really torn between these two groups. Thick as a Brick and Birds of Fire are two of my favorite albums, it is almost impossible for me to choose!
But because I know that Jethro Tull will win, I vote for the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra, one of the greatest electric bands of all time. With little or no equal.

Tull couldn't have done "Between Nothingness & Eternity", not even on a good day.

Mahavishnu by far, since their music is more interesting (and at times challanging) to listen to.
I'm not saying that Tull is a bad band, i even love Jethro Tull, But Mahavishnu is more my style!

Which band has won a Grammy?
Oh wait, that is not necessarily a good thing on PA, that will take votes away from JT.
Interestingly, when I checked to see if MO had won a Grammy before making this stupid post, I learned that Jan Hammer has won mulitple Grammys for movie and TV soundtracks such as Miami Vice. I am not that familiar with MO so it is probably not all that surprising that I didn't know that but interesting trivia in case there is anybody else living in the dark, such as I.

Tull easily, Tull are by far better song writers, Mahavisnhu have better musicians, but that doesn't make up for Tull domination in song writing. Tull have about 15 remasters that get a strong rating
thick as a brick
living in the past
bursting out
heavy horses
songs from the wood
benefit-super bonus tracks make this a pretty good cd
stormwatch-super bonus tracks make this a pretty good cd
warchild-lots of super bonus tracks make this a pretty good cd even if there are 3 or 4 kind of boring songs
aqualung-bonus tracks make this a pretty good cd even if there are 3 or 4 kind of boring songs
A-so underrated
broadsword-bonus tracks make this a pretty good cd even if there are 3 or 4 kind of boring songs
roots to branches
dotcom
stand up-bonus tracks make this a pretty good cd even if there are 3 or 4 kind of boring songs

For me, Tull has a greater quantity of great albums, and MO have greater quality in their best albums.
Really tough vote for me, but my gut tells me to go with Mahavishnu Orchestra.

You need more Thick As A Brick, sir. Nice to see a basically 30:40 ratio at the moment. Not a complete steamroller.

Tull is more listenable. MO have better musicianship but still like a group still don't reach Tull perhaps if you're talking about Barre and Mclaughing okay I understand. But still Tull has more better albums TAAB, This Was, Stand Up, APP, Roots to Branches and well I don't really like these but everyone consider masterpices or 4 star, Aqualung, MITG, Benefit.

MO's first two albums are fantastic, but Tull is TULL!! I find Tull to be more musically rewarding (IMO of course).
